FAD Federalism and Policy Making Assignment
FRQ 4 Argumentative Essay Skill Development
The United States Constitution establishes a federal system of government. Under federalism, policymaking is shared between national and state governments. Over time, the powers of the national government have increased relative to those of the state governments.
Develop an argument about whether the expanded powers of the national government benefit or hinder policy making.
Evidence and Reasoning must be used from the following foundational documents to support your claim.
The Articles of Confederation
Brutus 1
The Federalist 10
Use the information on the assignment page as well as the rubric to guide your responses. In complete sentences, add the thesis statement, evidence, and analysis in the space provided below.
______________
Thesis statement:
The expanded powers of the national government benefit from policymaking
because of the increase in cooperation federalism, and the advantages of fiscal federalism.
Support your claim using the Articles of Confederation.
Evidence 1: The Articles of confederation are an important example on why a strong national government is better than a strong state government because the use of the articles of confederation causes the government themselves to do little to no work and instead makes the states more independent and do their own work they have to make their own laws and also have to do their own taxes.
Reasoning 1: The U.S. tried giving states more power than the national government, but it was ineffective because it had to force them to make their currency and impose their taxes which is too much for a state to do.
Evidence 2: The Articles of Confederation made it harder to pass laws because each state has different things they need to get done, also it is required that all states agree in order to pass an amendment. Which makes it nearly impossible to pass or change a policy.
Reasoning 2: This makes it almost impossible to add a new amendment to change a policy. This causes it to take more time to pass an amendment and causes important amendments to not be passed at all.
Support your claim using Brutus 1.
Evidence 1: In Brutus 1 it goes into detail about how too much power within the federal government would cause tyranny and would leave the state government weak.
Reasoning 1: The federal government having too much power could make it so the state government can’t cater as well to their citizens and create laws that are beneficial to them. States could pass policies specifically for their states needs and to make it better.
Evidence 2: In Brutus 1, it says that "Without money, states cannot be supported, and their powers would be absorbed by the federal government thus, eliminating any sovereignty or autonomy left to the states,"
Reasoning 2: This means that the government is required to take many steps before passing a pass a policy. Although it takes more time it causes the policies to be better and have fewer flaws. Support your claim using Federalist 10.
Evidence 1: In Federalist 10 it says that a strong executive benefits the country due to it being easier for one person than a group to make decisions and causes someone to be held accountable for any decisions.
Reasoning 1: Having only one person in charge increases accountability, and it is efficient in decision-making because it takes less time for only one person to make decisions.
Evidence 2: In Federalist no.10, the author states that," A common passion or interest will, in almost every case, be felt by a majority of the whole," therefore the policy is looked at by almost everyone.
Reasoning 2: This causes the policy to be more beneficial to the people and it also causes the policy to have less or no flaws.
