Department of Justice Canada. 2021. Backgrounder: United Nations Declaration on The Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act. Government of Canada.
The Department of Justice is a Canadian institution that works to ensure that the federal judicial system is legitimate and relates to Canadian values. Reconciliation of Indigenous people should be at the forefront of government leaders’ platform. The United Nations has devised a declaration outlining the rights of Indigenous peoples. This legislation is beneficial because it is legally binding and can be used to hold federal departments accountable. The “United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act” requires
the Canadian government to cooperate and promote the measures that are intrenched in it. This reading primarily discusses ways in which the government will fight injustices, promote the rights of Indigenous peoples, and take all measures necessary to ensure that these laws resonate with other Canadian bills that have previously been passed. This reading relates to another reading from this week, as when passing legislation that involves Indigenous people, it is imperative that a representative is involved throughout the entire process (CIGI, 2014). As seen in both readings it is crucial that Indigenous peoples are involved in the creation and implementation of new bills that address issues that they face. This reading was assigned to identify the ways in which the Canadian government has implemented new ways to reconcile with Indigenous peoples and how their involvement in doing so promotes mutual respect and understanding.
