1. Explain why voters in Texas do not support third party candidates. What would a third-party candidate need to do to be successful in the Texas elections? (128) - Voters in Texas tend to think that their vote will go to waste if they vote for a third-party candidate. Most of the time it would go to waste since majority of the voters vote for Republican or Democratic parties anyway. Third party candidates would need to know the voters and make sure their ideologies are close to their own. 2. Discuss what happened to conservative Democrats in Texas and how that contributed to the growth of the Republican Party in the state. (137- 138) -Conservative Democrats, also known as Blue Dog Democrats, were lowered in their political status due to their social conservatism. Many Blue Dogs were against abortion but were supporting gun rights, this led to them to a confrontation with the prevailing consensus in their political party. Many Democratic officials switched parties to have more of an influence in politics. 3. Define the Tea Party movement and discuss its primary strategy for influencing Texas politics. What have been the consequences of this strategy? (129) -The Tea party movement advocates low end government funds, taxes, and limited government. To influence politics in Texas, the Tea Party influences the primary election for Republicans. They think they can get more political influence in state politics if they become powerful in the republican party. Some consequences of this strategy have been the defeat of third-party organizations, both state and nationwide.
4. Using Figure 4.2 and Table 4.1 from your textbook, describe the trend of the growth of the Republican Party in Texas. -according to the graphs shown in the textbook on pages 136-137. The graphs show that in 1975 the number of representatives for the Republican party have started to rise. Also, the number of officeholders in all departments has remained steady throughout the years between 2000- 2020. Except 2010, when the Texas house gained 101 officeholders. 5. Explain how changing demographics in urban areas such as Austin, Dallas, and Houston have made them more supportive of the Democrat Party. (140-141) -With the changing demographics in the cities and urban informants as people who wanted to escape the urban congestion could not afford the commute, it causes more affluent whites from urban to suburban areas. This movement left poop populations who could not have reliable transportation commute between the city and suburb. Thus, creating a more democratic group in Texas. 6. Discuss the two reasons Latinos have not recognized their full voting strength in Texas. (145). -Latinos have not yet recognized their potential due to many of them not being voters and not having the ability to vote. The Latino population is well around 2 million and they are not citizens, if they were they would have such a major impact on elections. The children of these Latino household who do not vote are considered citizens due to being born in the US, but many will not know how to vote or even grasp the impact they can make, due to their parents not being voters themselves. We will not know the full impact of the Latino party until the 1 st generation of Latinos come of age.
