Irvine Valley College Physics 4C Lab Report LAB 4: GAS LAWS Experiment Date: 2/25/20 Group #: 7 Name: Email: Researcher: Calvin Nguyen Cnguyen337@ivc.edu Analyst: Gregory Patanaude gpatenau@outlook.com PI: Nazanin Zand Naz.zand1377@gmail.com Researcher Report Due Tuesday 2/25 Analyst Report Due Saturday 2/29 PI Report Due Monday 3/2
LAB 5: Pre-calculations Following the procedure given in the Lab 5 Handout for Boyle’s Law, the initial gas volume was V i = 21.4 ± 0.5 mL , while the final volume after it expands is V f = 39.5 ± 0.5 mL . The graph of pressure vs. time was made and the time range when the plunger is fully depressed is selected, yielding a total number of 260 data points and a mean pressure of 185.856 kPa, and Standard Deviation of 0.128 kPa. After the gas is allowed to expand and temperature of reach its equilibrium value, a time range is selected, yielding a total number of 300 data points and a mean pressure of 102.218 kPa and Standard Deviation of 0.019 kPA. From the above information show the following calculations: 1. The Volume Ratio: V V 0 = 39.5 21.4 = 1.85 2. The Pressure Ratio: p 0 p = 185.856 102.218 = ¿ 1.818 3. The percent uncertainty in the above Pressure Ratio: ∂P 0 = σ N = 0.128 10 3 Pa 260 = 7.938 Pa ∂P= σ N = 0.019 10 3 Pa 300 = 1.096 Pa Δ P 0 P = ¿ ( ∂ P 0 P 0 ) 2 + ( ∂ P P ) 2 *100 = ( 7.938 185.856 10 3 ) 2 + ( 1.096 102.218 10 3 ) 2 *100 = 0.0044% Following the procedure given in the Lab 5 Handout for Guy Lussac’s Law, a graph is made of the Temperature (in ¿ vs. Absolute Pressure (in kPa). A linear trendline is fit to the plotted data yielding a fit with a slope value of m = 3.03 ± 0.11 / kPa , and y-intercept of b =− 283 ± 10 . 4. The Absolute zero temperature: T = ¿ b = - 283.0 Lab 4: GAS LAWS 2 of 4
