UCLA Physics 5C Lab 1 Worksheet - Fall 2023 Name: (complete sentences NOT required & bullet points are fine) Lab Section: 1. Scientific Question and Prediction: An ECG (EKG) measures the electrical activity of the heart, and is used to determine heart rate, along with subtleties about cardiac muscle activity during the heartbeat. a. List two other ways to determine your heart rate. b. Measure the heart rate of each member of the lab group using these two methods from part a. Then, using these measurements, make a prediction for everyone’s heart rate that you will measure using the ECG. 2. Experimental Preparations & Setup: Draw how the three leads connect to your arms for the ECG measurement. Consult your lab manual for clarification. 3. Data, Results & Analysis: Measure one person’s heart activity with SpikeRecorder for at least 30s. a. Draw an example of three cycles of example ECG heart activity. Label time associated with a single full cycle of heart activity, and find the heart rate. b. On the same drawing (above), identify three distinct regions of a single cycle of heart activity. Report the timing duration associated with each region, in ms. You must right-click and drag the respective region for ms. 4. Additional Measurements: Repeat steps 3a and 3b for the other two members of your lab group. If you had only used one cycle of heart activity to determine heart rate, zoom out and use the information about at least 10 cycles to obtain an average heart rate for increased precision. 1
UCLA Physics 5C Lab 1 Worksheet - Fall 2023 Name: Lab Section: a. Complete 3a for the other labmates: b. Complete 3b for the other labmates (use same space above): 5. Even though you don’t have all the background about exactly what the heart is doing, or how you are able to measure this activity from electrodes on your hand, you can still be confident about the timing associated with different states of the heart. Explain how you used the ECG signal to determine your heart beat. In your answer, consider the different regions and shapes seen and how you used those to determine your heart rate. Compare the variation/consistency between members of your lab group. 6. Sense-Making & Future Questions: a. Recap your overall physics experimental setup of the ECG. What do you think the heart is doing during each part of the heartbeat cycle? b. You will revisit the ECG (and EMG) with this same equipment later this quarter. List three questions/topics that connect this heart activity to physics that you would like to learn more about. In order to receive credit for this worksheet, convert it to a PDF and upload it into your 5CL Gradescope course. TinyScanner is a helpful phone app that automatically converts camera shots into PDF documents that you can email to yourself or upload (if you’re using a physical copy in lab). This first week is an individual assignment; for future weeks, the upload will be as a group assignment. 2
