Running Head: Milestone three 1 SCI 212 Fossil Lab Katrina Jordan February 20th, 2021
Milestone Three 2 The law of modern physics that has been focused as it applies to a washing machine is Centripetal force. Centripetal force is based on Newtons laws of motion. Newton discovered Centripetal force in 1666. Newtons first law of motion states “ a body at rest will remain at rest, and a body in motion will remain in motion unless acted upon by and external force,” (Lucas, 2019) For it to follow a circular path, as it does in a washing machine, it must have continuous centripetal force applied to it at a right angle. This is represented by the formula F centripetal = m(v 2 /r). Newton’s third law of motion states “for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction, (Lucas, 2019).” In a washing machine the centripetal force pulls the mass inward following the curved path, while the mass pushes outward as a result of inertia. All thought some of the first washing machines were made of wood, modern washing machines are mostly made of steal. The out frame and casing, the different components of the motors and the washing drum are all made of steel or stainless steel. Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon. The main ingredient, Iron, is element #26 (Fe). It is the most common metallic element in the universe. As evidenced by meteorites that have fallen to Earth, it is found everywhere. Iron was formed when organisms capable of photosynthesis released oxygen into the waters. This oxygen immediately combined with the abundant dissolved iron to produce hematite or magnetite. These are the minerals from which iron is obtained. Iron can be a brittle hard substance, and its pure form can corrode rapidly when exposed to high temperatures and humidity. The red, yellow, and orange colors found in some soil are from this oxidant process. Iron is also a key element in the body of animals and humans. The body uses iron to make hemoglobin and myoglobin. Hemoglobin is a protein that carries oxygen on red cells from the lungs to the rest of the body. Myoglobin is a protein that provides muscles with oxygen (Blaszczak-Boxe, 2017).
