Homework Assignment for Module 6 Review the assigned pages for this thinking skill in the Caputi book pages 45-53 Thinking Skill: Determining important information to collect 1. Describe in your own words what this thinking skill means. Determining important information to collect is having a general idea of what to look for and beginning the search, narrowing the search field as you go, until you have enough data to complete the task. 2. Give at least one example of how you use this thinking skill in your everyday life. When deciding what to make for breakfast, I ask my kids for ideas then I scavenge through the fridge and cupboards to see what ingredients we have. 3. In the example you provided, explain how "determining important information to collect" helped you analyze the data in your example to arrive at a clear, accurate understanding of the situation. Figuring out what ingredients we have, on hand, is “determining important information to collect.” I can’t make something that we don’t have the ingredients for. Once I have collected the needed data, I am able to move forward in decision making and preparations. Thinking Skill: Distinguishing relevant from irrelevant information 1. Describe in your own words what this thinking skill means: Distinguishing relevant from irrelevant information, is deciphering through all the information that a patient gives and figuring, out of that data, what is relevant to their condition or concern. 2. Give at least one example of how you use this thinking skill in your everyday life. When looking to make breakfast, I start by looking in all the basic places, cupboards and fridge. I have an idea of what I need, or think I might need, before I begin my search. 3. In the example you provided, explain how "distinguishing relevant from irrelevant information" helped you analyze the data in your example to arrive at a clear, accurate understanding of the situation. As I’m going through the fridge and cupboards, I am seeing everything that in there. I am able to decide what ingredients are needed, or could be used, and ignore the other items that have no
relevance to breakfast. In this way, I am distinguishing between relevant and irrelevant information, bringing me closer to my end goal of breakfast.
