1. From what your read about Greek philosophy; How do you see the Greek philosophers thinking in a way that gradually breaks out of mythical thinking? Philosophers were able to better understand themselves along with their surroundings. This impacted their critical thinking skills by questioning, researching, and analyzing further than before. The law of exclusion was introduced which transitioned them from mythical thinking to critical thinking. 2. Does religion play any role in their philosophy? Religion, in my opinion, did and did not impact their philosophy. After the Principle of Exclusion, they did not have a reason to have religion influence their thinking and explanations. However, their religion provided ideals and a belief that there was a higher power. 3. Do you think we can have a stable society and government if most of the American society believed in the Sophists ideas, why or why not? Explain. I do not believe Sophists’ ideas would fit in today’s American society. There was no idea of what was considered right or wrong. Morals were not a big factor in their society, and they had a concept of “might makes right.” If America would develop these ideas, there would not be a stable society due to the lack of punishment for certain crimes. You do not have to live by someone’s way a living; Americans are very diverse and are able to express themselves freely. 4. How do Socrates, Plato and Aristotle differ from the Sophists.
Socrates, Plate, and Aristotle had a different idea on truth. They believed that truth existed and there are standards set in place. The Sophists on the other had had no belief in a final truth. The individual was basically in charge of how goodness and justice was viewed on them. 5. Can the philosophies of the Stoics, Epicureans, Cynics and Skeptics offer any solutions to a society in crisis or in urgent need of major reforms? Why or why not? Their philosophies were based solely for their own concern. Their view on truth was based perspective on what was best/right for one person, not a society. Their solutions were all very different and were not uniform, so it would have a different impact on society today. It would all depend on what is viewed as right or wrong nowadays. 6. What is your personal opinion or impression about these early Greek thinkers in general. In your opinion how do you see these Greeks compared to the Mesopotamian and Egyptians. Greek thinkers were able to significantly contribute to the development of society through logical thinking, ethics, and sciences. Even with their limited resources, they were able to prosper thanks to the application of new ideas. Compared to the Mesopotamian and Egyptians, their critical thinking was more logical and rational. The Mesopotamians were known for their early development of civilization, writing and establishing law. Egyptians were known more for their architecture, religious ways, and knowledge.
