News Article Review
In early 2023, Mid Vermont Christian School decided to forfeit from a basketball playoff
game because a member of the other team was transgendered. They forfeited it on the premise
that the game was unfair and unsafe for the players. Unfortunately, the choice to forfeit led the
Vermont Principals’ Association to ban them from entering any competitions in the future
because they violated the policies on race, gender, and disability awareness (Associated Press,
2023). Now, the school has decided to sue the state of Virginia because it also took away their
participation in a town tuition program that provides students with tuition if their community
does not have a public school available for them to attend. This decision came from the
Department of Education in Virginia which said the school did not post a non-discrimination
policy on their website and could not be approved (Associated Press, 2023). The private school
relayed that this is causing harm to the students and school. The suit was just filed, and no
resolution has been found yet.
In this case, both sides have acted unethically to a degree. For starters, the school should
not have withdrawn from the tournament due to a player being transgendered if they knew about
it beforehand and still willingly competed. Although this goes against the beliefs and values of
the institution, it is still an expectation to love others as you would yourself
(New International
Version,
1978/2011, Galatians 5:14). The decision by the council and the Department of
Education is unethical in their withholding of funding as it is not stated whether the school was
not upholding the non-discrimination clause on the website. However, it is up to the state to
ensure that funding is received when necessary and they should “remove the plank from their
own eye”
(New International Version,
1978/2011, Matthew 7:5) and restore funding. Both parties
need to right their wrongs and behave ethically in this case.
