What is the difference between formal and informal support for families or caregivers of
individuals with disabilities regarding the areas of academic, transitional, and vocational skills?
Provide examples in your explanation. Does one form of support have more value than another?
Why or why not?
Informal supports use a community-based perspective and have knowledge about practices of
the individual family, knowledge, and resources about the communities in which they live. Some
examples of informal support include respect and confidence which foster an empowering
relationship with the caregivers. Informal supports are those freely given and offer help and
support. Informal support is so important because we all need a good support system. With this
type of support system, we can ask for advice, practical assistance, and help thinking through
problems. The right amount of informal support can make a huge difference in the emotional
state of a family and keeps them feeling supported at school. Informal supports are great for
safeguards.
Safeguards are supports that promote and protect an individual’s human rights,
decision-making, wellbeing, and quality of life. When people are at risk of their rights being
compromised, safeguards provide responses to minimize this risk (Peer Connect, 2023).
Formal support uses services and structures meant to allow access to the resources held by the
system they use for formal support issues. Within formal supports commitments and
involvements can be based upon supervisors, managers, and medical staff, meaning people not
directly involved with the family. Formal support gives services that are paid for by trained
professionals like social workers, therapists, transportation, etc.
With proper supports—such as
PAS, housing, transportation, benefits, health care, peer support, early intervention and
prevention, P&As, and CILs—most parents with disabilities and their families will have greater
opportunity to live and grow together (National Council on Disability, 2023).
Both formal and
informal support for families or caregivers of individuals with disabilities are important in the
areas of academic, transitional, and vocational skills. Both types of support are equally important
for families to grow and thrive. They each offer enrichment in different areas of the child’s and
family’s lives. When working together properly these supports set families up for success.
