Please watch the video “The Modern Bystander Effect” at
https://retroreport.org/video/
the-modern-bystander-effect/#rr-education-section
and
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHTUdV9WTzQ
and answer the following questions with at least 25 words each:
1. If a fellow student were livestreaming a fight in which several students were attacking another,
and you saw that 100 people were watching the video, what would you do? Is there a
difference between how we’d like to answer this question, and what the research seems to
indicate about how we’re most likely to behave?
I would report the video to local authorities such as police but most importantly, I would not
share the video to anyone. Regarding the difference between how I answer and what research
indicate about how we are most likely to behave, it is possible that our ideal reactions differ from
our actual reactions in crisis situations. However, it is important to always act responsibly and
ethically in such circumstances.
2. Why are people less likely to report an act of violence if they believe that many other people
are witnessing the violence? What does that teach us about the psychology of responsibility and
morality?
I think people are less likely to report an act of violence if they believe that many other people
are witnessing the violence because they think that other people will do and they do not want to
take responsibility and be involved. The psychology of responsibility and morality teaches us
that it depends on personal characteristics, culture, and environmental.
3. How can social media platforms be redesigned to work against the tendencies of the bystander
effect?
Social media platforms can be redesigned to work against the tendencies of the bystander effect
by integrating programs to raise awareness and by automatically reporting any inappropriate
comments, videos, pictures, and music with severe real consequences other than being banned
from social media where people can create a new account and keep doing bad things.
4. Go to
https://www.apa.org/pi/health-equity/bystander-intervention
and share at least one tip/
suggestion for reducing the bystander effect.
According to the Bystander Intervention Tip Sheet, to reduce the bystander effect, we could all
practice the Upstanding 5 Steps :
•
Notice a discriminatory/emergency situation and interpret it.
•
Evaluate the incident’s problematic nature and decide if it requires intervention.
•
Assume responsibility for intervening.
•
Know and decide how to approach the situation.
