Session 1 Paper Amanda Sauls Biblical Studies: Colorado Christian University PHIL-205A-35005-FA23: Worldviews Dr. Sean Hadley November 19, 2023
Introduction A worldview is a view of the world, used for living in the world and a person’s metal model of reality or their system of theories about the world and how it works. We all have our own personal worldview. However, there are cultural worldviews which can affect a person’s worldview. There are many factors that may affect a personal worldview, for example, life- situations, background experience, values, attitudes, and habits developed, and inherited characteristics. These factors vary by person and even though some worldviews are shared they are always unique. Theology: Who Is God? God is the creator of the universe, omnipotent, omniscient, and a divine being through whom we live and move and have our being. Knowing God’s nature and character is the key to figuring out what is most important in life. “The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands. And he is not served by human hands as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else.” To really know who God is we must know his word, The Bible, spend time with him daily so that we may know his character, and share with others what we know about him and how he has worked in our own lives. Philosophy: What is the love of wisdom? The love of wisdom is figuring out what the nature of reality is, how we know what we know, and how to accurately know about reality and knowledge. The love of wisdom
emphasizes the deep-rooted value of philosophy as a way of life. In James 1:5 the Bible tells us to ask God for wisdom which comes from prayer for God’s help. Wisdom is a God-given discernment regarding the practical issues in life. Ethics: What is the good life? Ethics is the study that seeks a life that is actually good. Attempting to understand the ways people act based on their beliefs and how those actions allow them to chase the good life. The good life for a Christian is being in loving relationships with God and others. The good life is also living a life that is pleasing to God, living holy as he is holy. Biology: What does the natural world tell us about creation? The consistency of natural laws and the intricacy of living forms point to the existence of an intelligent Creator behind these things, and I think that this supernatural power is responsible for maintaining the order and stability of the entire world. The natural world is a reflection of the love and beauty of the Creator, and that it invites us to investigate and appreciate its many beauties since it contains so many mysteries and wondrous things . The beauty and complexity of the natural world is evidence of the Creator's love for us, and that it can teach us how to live in harmony with the environment and with each other. The natural world, in my view, is both a reflection of the divine and a source of truth and wisdom. Psychology: What makes a human being a person? The Bible portrays human beings as self-conscious, willful, innovative entities who, under God, preside over their environment. Each male and female was made by God in the likeness of his own personhood; nothing else in all creation can be called a person. The Bible

says that we were all created in the image of God; therefore we all have some things in common. We all have similar limitations and needs, such as, food, shelter, clothing, the need to be loved and to love, and being constrained by our physical capacity and strength. Sociology: How should we live in a community? In order to live in a community, it is essential to treat other people with kindness and compassion, to be open to diverse points of view, to respect the natural world and the environment, to be mindful of our own actions, and to work toward achieving justice and equality. It is also important for us to try to be aware of the impact that we have on the communities in which we live and to work toward making contributions that are beneficial not only to ourselves but to the community as a whole. The ability to comprehend not just our own viewpoint but also that of others enables us to coexist peacefully and to cultivate an atmosphere that is characterized by admiration and comprehension. This includes respecting the ideas and values of individuals from diverse cultures and backgrounds, listening to others and learning from the experiences and viewpoints of others, and engaging in discourse with the goal of finding areas of agreement. Law: What constitutes a just law? A just law is a man-made code that squares with the moral law or the law of God. Just laws are consistent with the moral rights of people and they are implemented in conformity with the principles of natural justice. God lays down rules to form the optimal conditions for human flourishing. Paul tells us in Romans 7 that any law given by God is a good law and we must uphold these laws by our faith in Christ. Obedience to God is the ultimate law and should be abiding by daily.
Politics: In whom should power rest? The power rest in God and the authorities he has ordained to rule. The idea that rights are a gift from God secured by government is more logically persuasive, morally appealing, and politically sound than any theistic theory that maintains human rights are derived from the state. God calls certain people as leaders to wisely direct and oversee the proper use of earthly resources. Romans 13, tells us that all governments are under God, reminding us that all power rest in him. Economics: How should a society be productive? Economics is part of the created order and part of God’s general revelation. The economic laws that are implications of human action are reflections of God’s glory as he reveals it in creation. The division of labor increases our productivity and our standard of living, therefore, it serves as the primary incentive for people to develop and participate in society. Having an economic system that is constrained by the biblical ethic of property will be one that is most conducive to human flourishing. History: How can the past help future human flourishing? I believe that the past can help us to understand how to move forward in the future. By studying the mistakes of the past, we can learn to avoid making the same mistakes in the future. We can learn from the successes of the past and apply the same principles to our current situations. By understanding our history, we can build upon the successes of the past and create
a better future. Ultimately, I believe that the past can help us to create a brighter future for humanity. Conclusion The end result is always the same, God is in control, God has all the power, and God is the only way that we can live life to the fullest. Without God we are unable to be productive, abide by the laws, have wisdom, and learn from our mistakes so that we may flourish in the future. God is the ultimate answer to all of life’s problems and circumstances.
