Post-Unit Reflection Paper Reflect on your learning about the topic. Sexual Orientation The purpose of the post-unit reflection is to compare what you knew prior to the unit’s activities with what you know now. This demonstrates growth in your awareness of self and others and achievement of course goals. Be sure to explain the concept rather than just listing it. This lets ME know what YOU know about the concept. 1. Conceptual understanding. Concepts are introduced in the readings/homework and Powerpoint. Refer to these resources to remind yourself of key concepts introduced in the unit. a) Describe at least 3 concepts you were already familiar with. I was already familiar with the concept of heteronormativity which is the perception that heterosexual relationships are the standard and anything else is other. Another concept I was previously familiar with is homophobia which is the hatred of or fear of non-hetersexuals that may lead to violence or discrimination. Finally I was also familiar with the different sexual orientations like lesbian, gay, and bisexual. b) Describe any concepts you thought you were familiar with but learned something new or different. At the start of the unit I thought I was familiar with how sexuality can influence leisure and vice versa but it is more complicated than I originally thought. While I am a queer person I grew up in a family that supported me and never faced explicit homophobia from my peers. While I had to be careful about keeping my sexuality to myself my safety was not threatened. I learned just how much safety within an environment can impact leisure choices. c) Describe any concepts you were unfamiliar with but now have a better understanding. A concept I was unfamiliar with is the significant power imbalance between heterosexual identifying people and queer people. I think it is one of those things you don’t think about until it comes up but once you do you realize that the heterosexual person has all of the power within any dynamic. Heterosexual people don’t have to worry about how their sexuality will affect their ability to get jobs or have a family. d) Describe at least 2 concepts that stick out to you and explain why they were particularly meaningful to you. Minimum of 50-75 words for EACH . One concept that really stands out to me is the fluidity of sexuality. We as a society tend to think of sexuality as rigid and unchanging but that is not what it is. Sexulity is personal and ever changing and we do ourselves a disservice by forcing it into a binary. Another thing that sticks with me is the mind field around the legal obligations to serve queer populations. Within the United States the laws are so varied that something that is legal in one state could get you arrested in another and that is insane sounding in my mind. 2. Use the following sources to reflect upon your learning: readings/homework, artifact analysis, case study analysis, discussions, privilege checklist, additional resources on Canvas.
a) Describe what you have learned about your cultural competence. Minimum 100 words a. Describe what you have learned about your sexual identity. Have you experienced heteronormativity or compulsory heterosexuality? Illustrate with examples. I am a queer woman and I have known that since I was 12 but until this class I never thought about how growing up in a heteronormative really affected me. If I didn’t grow up in a time where queer characters were beginning to show up on screen I may not have figured out my sexuality until I was much older. In my head I just assumed that it was normal for straight people to want to kiss their friends but never having a crush. I remember in my late teens when I finally realized that having really strong feelings about wanting to be a girl friend was actually me having a crush on her. I, like every other queer person also had to come out over and over again because the assumption is always straight. b. Awareness of sexual identity as a cultural identity marker. Provide at least two examples of how leisure reinforces/reproduces heteronormative stock stories or vice versa. One example of leisure reinforcing heteronormative stock stories is sports that are heavily gendered like ballet. Being seen as a feminine activity men who express an interest in it are immediately called gay whether they are or are not. This reinforces the stock story that all gay men are feminine and discourages the interest of boys in the activity for fear of being called gay and the implications of that. Another example is the idea that homosexual people need to be banned from the locker room. This perpetuates the idea that queer people are predatory, a common stigma that the community has worked tirelessly to move away from. Historically queerness has been equated with pedophilia and by continuing to perpetuate these stereotypes queer people are discouraged from participating in leisure activities. b) Describe what you have learned about sociopolitical consciousness. Minimum 100 words a. Awareness of personal privilege or oppression related to sexual identity. Identify specific ways you are privileged and/or oppressed in relation to your sexual identity. Use examples to illustrate your points. As stated earlier I am a queer woman and I have spent my whole life since realizing I was gay wondering if coming out is safe. When I came out to my mom one of the first things she told me was to only tell my family and make sure no one at school knew. This was not because she was ashamed of me but because she was concerned for my safety. If my peers knew I risked being kicked off of the swim team and potentially harassed for a part of myself I can not control. I am also treated differently by members of my family. My grandmother refuses to talk to me about my love life, something she does with all my other cousins, because my sexuality makes her uncomfortable. b. antidiscrimination strategies, professional practice and/or policy implications. Review strategies and practices discussed in the reading and in class. Describe, in detail, a specific strategy and explain how it is antidiscriminatory
Affirmative Inclusive approach means acknowledging patrons who identify with a particular group, for example having programs specifically for LGBTQ+ patrons. This is anti discriminatory because it provides safe opportunities for marginalized groups to experience leisure. Providing opportunities that are so often denied because of sexuality. Another is to stop assuming heterosexuality, something we as a society are often all too guilty of doing, intentional or not. By not assuming someone's sexuality you provide a space for them to freely be themselves combatting the harm assumed heterosexuality can do for a queer person. And another is rebuilding better, tearing down an unfair system in order to rebuild in a way that no one group privileges from. 3. Describe if and in what ways the learning opportunities (e.g., readings/homework, collective memory work or artifact analysis, case study analysis, discussions) facilitated your learning. Be sure to describe what you learned through that particular activity Once again class discussions were very helpful to me. I tend to get stuck in my own thoughts and hearing other people's ideas helps me to expand my horizons.
