Week 11 Discussion #2: CULTURAL COMPETENCE.
Supplying Culturally Competent Medical Social Work Services: A Case Study Approach.
Rory’s Case:
It is important for social workers to figure out a balance between upholding hospice center policies and honoring their patients' spiritual convictions. Given the circumstances, I would go about Rory’s situation this way:
a.
Begin a dialogue
: I would arrange a meeting with Rory's family and tribal elders to convey my understanding of the cultural significance of the cleansing ceremony and its personal significance to Rory. I would willingly grant their request because of the spiritual significance it owns.
b.
Evaluate hospice policies:
I would explain the hospice center's strict ban on burning herbs, emphasizing that it applies to all patients and that it is in place for safety reasons. It is imperative to specify that the policy's objective is to safeguard the welfare and security of all patients, not to offend upon their cultural practices (Brown, L. K., & Garcia, R. M. (2019).
To honor Rory's spiritual beliefs and cultural practices, I would look into alternatives to the practice of incinerating botanicals indoors. Proposing an outdoor ceremony, seeking advice from spiritual or tribal leaders on alternative options, or find a secure area within the hospice facility to perform the cleansing are all options. I can collaborate with the hospice team, which would include medical personnel, administrators, and other relevant experts, to reach a resolution that adheres to the hospice center's safety protocols and Rory's cultural beliefs. I would
keep track of the deliberations, alternatives considered, and final decision. It is critical to convey this information to the family and tribal elders with courtesy and compassion, as well as a rationale for the course of action.
Cultural considerations include honoring Native American traditions when providing assistance to Rory's family in this specific circumstance. Recognizing and honoring Rory’s cultural significance of the smudging
ceremony as it relates to Native American customs. Social workers should recognize the therapeutic and spiritual dimensions of these practices. It is necessary to communicate effectively and with empathy is essential. Social workers should be open to hearing the opinions of family members and tribal elders, showing a sincere desire to understand and honor their cultural beliefs. Working in partnerships with cultural experts, tribal leaders, or spiritual advisors can help show culturally appropriate substitutes or adaptations while maintaining safety standards and showing respect for the patient's beliefs. This is why collaboration is so important. Also, flexibility which is important, especially for social workers who are open to creative solutions that strike a balance between cultural sensitivity and safety concerns.
Actions that a medical social worker should take in response to the cultural factors that represents Rory's case:
a. Cultural competence:
By showing cultural competence, gaining knowledge of the distinctive cultural practices and beliefs of Native American communities and recognize their significance.
b. Consultation:
Getting advice from Rory's family and tribal elders to gain an understanding of the patient's distinct cultural requirements and preferences.
c. Collaboration:
Work with the healthcare team to develop culturally sensitive solutions, which may include spiritual advisors, cultural liaisons, or community leaders (Rodriguez, M., & Martinez, S. L. (2021).
d. Advocacy:
With being successful in speaking up for the patient and their family by informing the medical facility of their cultural needs in a courteous and sympathetic way. The goal is to come to a mutually acceptable conclusion.
e. Documentation:
Keep thorough documentation of all discussions, conversations, and decisions regarding the patient's cultural needs and the actions taken to meet them.
