What do you now know about ethical practices with couples and families that you did not previously know?
I found it very interesting that if an individual wants separate counseling from their spouse, you must check regulations for your state to ensure that you are not doing anything unethical. In some cases, this could be considered hiding information from a spouse, for example, if the wife disclosed an active affair in an individual session (Zazzario, 2021).
What surprised you?
I was shocked that this could be considered unethical because I always assumed that individual counseling meant it did not have to be discussed in marriage counseling. I did not know that it could be considered unethical, and now I know it is best to check regulations regarding ethical dilemmas.
What intimidates you? What do you think will be challenging when working with couples and families?
What intimidates me is ethical dilemmas where you must ensure you do not seem to be taking a side. I always want to appear neutral and see all perspectives in each session. Our reading talks about ensuring that no one feels left out or unheard. A challenge I may face is dealing with couples who argue. I always pride myself
on not being in relationships with much arguing, and I must realize that isn’t everyone's approach. I will have to learn more about helping families work through these arguments and know how to de-escalate arguments.
How will you incorporate ethics into your professional development?
I will include ethics in every aspect of my professional development because it is the only way to ensure you follow the code of ethics. I will review the code of ethics for ideas and approaches to ensure I approach each situation ethically. It is important to come off ethically correct
to ensure I am not biased in my decisions. In reading Timothy Brown's article, I like that within the school system, it is essential to use an ethical decision-making model to help solve situations (Brown, 2017). You are approaching each case but ensuring that your approach is deemed ethically correct.
Would you have handled some of the situations presented in the video differently? If so, what would you have done differently?
I would not have dealt with the situation differently because you do not know what you will do then, but you want to ensure it is the right decision. For example, Dr. Scott did not know her client would be at her home, but she did
not engage in any additional activities. She did not make him seem unwelcome and removed herself from the situation. I imagined it wasn't easy
to figure out what she should do at that moment. I like how Dr. Jenkins made
sure she protected her client’s privacy when her client wanted to bring in her
partner. It was a great ethical approach, and I agree with how she handled the fight with the couple.
