Campaign for Gun Injury Prevention Dawn Parker Grand Canyon University HLT 520: Legal and Ethical Principles in Health Care Dr. Donna Levesque March 6, 2024 1
Campaign for Gun Injury Prevention Presenter: Hello and thank you for tuning in to our newly released podcast discussing Legal and Ethical Principles in Healthcare. In this series, we will be talking about a major worldwide issue, Preventing Gun Violence, and Injury. Our first subject is a highly debated topic, gun regulation and its effects on healthcare. As a nation, the United States has the greatest rate of privately held weapons, with 101 guns for every one hundred people. Gun violence claims the lives of thirty-two individuals per day and leaves an additional 140 injured or requiring medical attention. Researchers claim the number of lives lost due to gun violence in only seven weeks is more than double that of the whole seven-year conflict in Iraq. Premature death due to firearms is more common among young individuals. In addition to the human cost of lives lost, the yearly cost to the US healthcare system of gun violence is an enormous burden, reaching $2.3 billion. Every year, gun violence costs more than $100 billion (Jehan, et al., 2018). The growing number of gun deaths has prompted calls for stricter gun control laws. Presenter : Individuals' rights to own and carry weapons are protected by the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution, which was enacted in 1791 as part of the Bill of Rights. Concerns about public safety have fueled debates over gun ownership ever since. People felt that lawmakers were violating their Second Amendment rights when they attempted to restrict people's access to weapons. More people are demanding tougher gun control regulations, although nothing has changed in this subject matter since the 1968 Gun Control Act, passed in response to the Kennedy assassination. More strict gun rules were once again debated after the horrific shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012 and the 2011 shooting of Arizona Congresswoman Gabriel Gifford (Jehan, et al., 2018). 2
Presenter: Is there anything that hospitals can do to ensure the safety of their staff, visitors, and patients? Whose responsibility is it to make sure these people are safe, our administrators? Making decisions and formulating policies for screening weapons and how to manage them properly at a healthcare facility requires careful consideration of the many complex elements that impact the risks. The existence, handling, and reaction to firearms at a healthcare facility are crucial matters of health and safety for staff, clients, and visitors. The creation and evaluation of initiatives to reduce this risk depend on our understanding of the factors associated with security personnel seizing firearms. Organizations that installed metal detectors had a probability of weapon confiscation that was over five times higher than those that did not. To drastically lessen the dangers connected with weapons carried into the institution, metal detectors are an essential part of security procedures for healthcare facilities (Blando, et al., 2021). Security precautions and "gun-free zone" policies are commonplace at hospitals. To address this issue and improve community safety, healthcare professionals must work together, according to Gooch (2023). Nearly fifty chief executive officers of large healthcare organizations have pledged to do something about gun violence in the wake of recent killings in the United States. Representatives of the group agreed with the following statement: "Firearms are increasingly becoming the primary cause of death among young individuals." There must be an immediate response to this (Gooch, 2023).  Presenter : Can we, as a community, find out a way to reduce gun violence in our state? Volunteers from the grassroots network of Everytown for Gun Safety—Florida Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action—planned an advocacy day for the 2024 legislative session today. During the session, they also organized a press conference to promote gun control legislation. In honor of and solidarity with victims of gun violence, activists from Moms Demand 3

Action and Students Demand Action gathered outside the Florida State Capitol. Along with this, they have been urging Florida politicians to pass a sensible gun safety bill that would save lives. As part of this effort, we must stand in solidarity with the victims of the Parkland, Florida, high school massacre and urge lawmakers to pass a law requiring the safekeeping of all vehicles. Expanding the 3-day waiting period to all sorts of firearms and putting the minimum age for gun buyers at 21, these rules have proven to be beneficial (Cusick, 2022). Every year, 2,989 people die and 5,267 are injured in Florida gun accidents. Among U.S. states, Florida has the twentieth- highest rate of gun violence, and firearms are the second-leading killer of Florida's youth. Every year, 214 children and teenagers lose their lives because of gun violence in Florida. Tragically, these devastating figures are preventable. Presenter: There is a common line of reasoning in the United States that maintains any legislation aimed at reducing gun violence violates the Second Amendment, which protects the freedom to keep and bear arms. The right to bear arms is not specifically mentioned as being as basic as the right to free speech, even if the constitution may include a provision permitting the right to keep firearms for other purposes. One may make the case that the purpose of enacting gun control laws is to ensure our autonomy. It is crucial to ensure protection from gun violence to honor individuals as autonomous agents and bearers of dignity. Others have specific protections and benefits because they must also honor their autonomy. Even if it violates the rights of certain people, consequentialism argues that society should be prioritized. Countless lives may be saved if gun restrictions were to be enacted, according to the argument. Utilitarianism is a kind of consequentialism that advocates for measures that increase the well- being of the majority while decreasing damage (Iwundu, et al., 2022). 4
