Moore1 Philosophy of inclusive education Najahe N . Moore EDU-220 Professor- Dana Teague 11/20/23
Moore2 Inclusive education reminds me of the famous quote Equal is everyone getting the same thing, equity is ensuring there is a pathway for everyone to get what they need to be successful ”. Students should be able to learn in the same environment as others no matter their disabilities . Just getting the proper help and tools they need in a regular classroom environment , what does inclusive education mean to me? First let’s start with the definition of inclusion , Inclusion means that students with and without disabilities learn alongside one another , in the same classroom setting , with lessons that are accessible for all . (Teague , 2023 , slide 5) As for my definition is an education chance where students are welcome and learn, grow, and most importantly prosper. Equal no matter their disabilities . Inclusive education should have goals and requirements you would like to meet with all your students as a whole and even individually . Some goals of inclusive education are providing students from all different backgrounds and disabilities with the most safe and welcoming learning environment, including giving them the right path and right set of circumstances from them to best achieve their protentional . Another important goal of an inclusive education is to create an environment where all students are encouraged to participate . In things like learning about one another backgrounds and help students discuss and develop deeper socioeconomic and racial awareness . Another goal of an inclusive classroom is to plan to teach inclusively, such as including a variety of learning materials and activities that supports all students learning styles . One activity I plan on using in the classroom that Is quite different is inviting guest speakers to share their stories . I learned that they are very beneficial when students can identify with a teacher or guest
Moore3 speaker’s racial or ethnic background, they are more likely to perform higher and be more engaged as they see a potential role model or mentor in that person . (Pullum,2023) . Inviting different guest speakers as one of my inclusive classroom activities, can provide my future students with an authentic learning experience they may have never had besides me . I had many experiences that shaped my personal philosophy of inclusive education but the ones that stick out the most it was a girl in my class named Violet, she had many disabilities, but she was very smart, but she was very shy and didn’t answer much . She was the only one in my class that was disabled . She seemed very lonely our teacher wasn’t welcoming to her, looking back I wished the class was more welcoming and open for violet or her abilities, I felt like she was just looked at for her disabilities not her abilities. She needed that . As a future teacher, with all the knowledge I know now looking back at that moment if I was violet’s teacher I would engage conversation, one-to-one and even group conversation and most importantly small group communication built into class instruction. Some students’ instructional goals may relate to engaging in social relationships and are, in fact, quite common for students labeled with emotional and behavioral disabilities and autism . (Susan & Arthor,2017, p . 150) In teaching acceptance and promoting many ways to communicate is important . Me being a future teacher my personal philosophy of inclusion education is to be welcoming making the child feel safe to learn and be open to inclusive activities or anything we do in the classroom . As people with brain and body differences have the lowest graduation rates, highest incarceration rates, and highest unemployment out of any minority group . (Mooney,2019, p.55) Knowing this I wouldn’t want this to happen in the future, I want every student to feel accepted and most importantly wanted . Which brings me to culturally responsive teaching which consists

Moore4 of multiple expressions of diversity (racial, social class, gender, language, sexual orientation, nationality, religion, ability) which are recognized and regarded as assets for teaching and learning . (Teague,2023, slide5) From a simpler understanding it is a pedagogy custom for students, characteristics, experiences, and perspectives as tools for better classroom instruction . Which is really good for students of color see themselves and their communities as belonging in academic spaces . Which will be strongly used in my classroom . I want my future students to feel safe getting the proper education they deserve and ready to sprout to their full potential no matter their disabilities . At a time, this was not possible, and I want my future students to know that, and they are accepted . In 1975, education for all handicapped children Act passed to guarantee equal access to public education (Teague,2023, slide8). Prior to this act being passed schools were able to say that they didn’t offer services, that a student may needed . Schools were now Required to provide a solid full education and to acceptance all students . Students with disabilities found that their educational opportunities changed dramatically for the better . (Boyd,2023) Giving a child no matter their disabilities the tools of an education can take them a long way and I’ll always remember this Act . This philosophy will influence my role as a teacher in many ways . It will always remind to be open to all different backgrounds . Helping me make sure every child feels welcomed . Including making my lesson plans inclusively . Making sure I am always engaging and learning about my students . Including using ice breakers and energizers to get students excited and ready to learn . growing up I didn’t have much representation and diversity in a classroom to embrace I was but I will make sure in my classroom every student will be proud of who they are and what they are
Moore5 becoming down the line . As always if any of students ever feel as though they don’t fit in or they are different I will remind them of a quote that will stick with me for the rest of my teaching life . ’Have you ever considered that you are a valuable human being, not despite your differences but because of them?” . (Mooney,2019) .
