1.) Review the options below and decide which option you will choose. Indicate
why you have selected the chosen option and why you believe this option is
egalitarian in its alignment and application of your core principle listed above.
My choice would be to kill the prisoner. The main factor guiding this decision was the
safety and welfare of the entire group comes first. In a challenging post-apocalyptic
world filled with lurking dangers, the group's top priority is safeguarding its members. By
removing Randall, who is seen as a potential threat, the group is taking action to
guarantee the safety of everyone in the collective. If the world was like how it was
before the zombie outbreak then my answer would be different. And since it was his
group that attacked us hoping to steal all of our food and supplies, what makes us think
that if we released him he wouldn’t come back and bring all his friends to finish what
they started. Since we have no idea how many members are in his group or how
dangerous they could be, I wouldn’t take any chances on that. It might be a hard
decision to live with but we will still be alive.
2.) Discuss whether your decision is more aligned with the principles of Thomas
Hobbes or John Locke- why?
My choice is more in line with the idea of Thomas Hobbes. Hobbes supported a robust
central authority to upheld security and order within the society, even if that meant
people had to relinquish some of their freedoms for the common benefit. The group's
decision to remove Randall, viewed as a potential danger, echoes Hobbes' philosophy
by placing the safety and stability of the collective above individual needs. The choice to
eliminate Randall, reflects the group's collective commitment to ensuring security and
order, which harmonizes with Hobbes' notion that individuals are willing to sacrifice
certain liberties for the sake of safety.
3.) Does your choice support classical liberalism or classical republicanism —
How? Does classical republicanism or classical liberalism best support the
growth and development of ordered society — why do you believe so, what
quotes from Hobbes and Locke would you use to support your position?
I believe that my choice aligns with classical republicanism because it prioritizes the
safety of the group. Despite the absence of a formal government in this post-apocalyptic
world, the decisions and actions of the group function as a way to establish and uphold
order within their community. This approach places significant importance on what
benefits the community as a whole. In this situation, the choice of whether to eliminate
Randall or not is motivated by the desire to protect the overall well-being of the group. It
reflects a commitment to do anything necessary to stay alive. Even if it means
eliminating a perceived threat that could disrupt the stability and order of the group.
