Strategy: Current counterterrorism strategies of the Biden administration are not at the top of the list of priorities. Biden has stated “ terrorism is not an existential threat,” as issues such as energy and climate change takes precedent. With an increase of domestic attacks to include mass shootings and school shootings, the Biden administration believes that “right-wing extremist groups as more of a threat to democracy than that of al-Qaeda and ISIS (Baumann, 2021)”. The strengths of the counterterrorism strategy involve intelligence gathering and international cooperation, while weaknesses may include the difficulty in preventing lone wolf attacks and the spread of extremist ideology. The strengths lie in intelligence gathering, which helps in identifying and disrupting terrorist activities. International cooperation also plays a key role in sharing information and coordinating efforts to combat terrorism. On the other hand, weaknesses include the challenge of preventing lone wolf attacks, as well as the spread of extremist ideology, which can be difficult to address effectively. The current counterterrorism strategy has been effective in disrupting and mitigating the threats posed by the terrorist organization, but there are ongoing challenges in addressing lone wolf attacks and countering extremist ideology; Because of the recent increase of lone offender attacks from right-wing extremist, is why I also believe that they are more of a threat to democracy than Islamic extremist at the moment. Recommendation: To address these weaknesses, there could be a focus on community engagement to counter extremist ideology and improved coordination to prevent lone wolf attacks. To counter extremist ideology, the strategy could involve community outreach programs and education to promote tolerance and understanding. Additionally, enhancing coordination among law enforcement agencies and international partners can help prevent and respond to lone wolf
attacks more effectively. By engaging communities and promoting understanding, the strategy can help prevent radicalization and disrupt the influence of Al-Qaeda in the region. Coordination among law enforcement agencies and international partners will also strengthen the ability to counter Al-Qaeda's activities. The potential global impact of these changes is that they can contribute to reducing the influence and reach of Al-Qaeda worldwide, making it more difficult for them to carry out attacks and recruit new members. This could lead to a safer and more secure global environment. The fusion center would need advanced monitoring tools, enhanced training for threat assessment, and resources for community engagement initiatives. The fusion center could use the media to raise public awareness about the strategy, share success stories, and encourage community involvement in preventing terrorism. This could help build support and understanding for the objectives of the strategy.
