Preparing for Class Session Worksheet
Name: Kirby Logan Date: April 19, 2023
Name of Article: Social Work, Religion, and Palliative Care
1.
What were two main points for you in the assigned reading? (Two points) One point was the faith organizations have been an important component of the development of community social service organizations, particularly in the delivery of services to the poor and other marginalized groups. Many organizations delivering social services to
the disadvantaged started in churches. The second point was social workers should be versed in spirituality and religion, including religion language, and have some level of comfort in meeting people in these spaces. Understanding the language and narratives that fit people’s experience is critical in building relationships pf trust and
support. 2.
What immediate thoughts and feelings did you notice as you were reading? (Two points)
I think that religion and spirituality are so important in social work. Even though everyone is not religious, you have more people who have some type of spirituality. Learning religious and spirituality will be so helpful because it gives you another level to meet your clients where they are. 3.
What questions do you have related to the reading? (Two points) How many churches have a counselor that helps with concerns and problems of the congregation. How important is mental health in the church? As a social worker how important is it to you to connect religion and spirituality to and with your clients. Do you compromise your beliefs due to your career?
4.
How do you see yourself applying what you have read? Strengths and barriers to application?
(Two points) Studying more of different religion and levels of spirituality so that I can reach my clients on another level. We have to be able to meet them on their level and not on ours. Just because we have different beliefs does not stop us from reaching the same destination.
5.
What do you most want to gain a better understanding of/learn more about next? (Two points) A better understanding of the different spiritualties and religion for me and my clients. (Adapted from Beck, J. S. [2006]. Cognitive therapy worksheet packet.
