As a teacher candidate, I am devoted to embodying our College of Education philosophy to learn, lead, and serve. My role as a teacher candidate is to learn through not only attending professional development courses but also through my actions and daily practice both within and outside of the confines of the classroom. A teacher candidate's role is to lead by example and embody the Christian worldview of leading in accordance with God’s word in a way that promotes our student's flourishing. To embody the philosophy of serving both my school site and community means to serve in a manner that aligns with GCU’s statement on the integration of faith and work and honor god’s plan by serving to promote student success. In short, my role as a teacher candidate is to uphold the laws and regulations of both GCU and my school site while also leading, serving, and learning according to God’s word. Throughout my student teaching experience, my teaching philosophy has grown and developed to embody the core values of what it means to be a teacher in a special education setting and a role model to the students in my community who may seek me as such. When I first began my journey into student teaching, my philosophy was to lead by example and be a positive role model to the students in my classroom. Over the weeks, this still reigns true but has developed further to encompass aspects of being an individual to make a difference in a student's life and advocate for student's rights to the education they each deserve. My philosophy also encompasses the InTASC standards and professional dispositions that all students are capable of learning and should each be held to a high standard within the classroom. As I continue to learn and grow with my students, I aim to provide a safe and appropriate learning experience that will ultimately help them reach their goals and be successful not only in school but in life. Technology can be used to help create a better learning environment and opportunities for students by providing students who may not be able to access the curriculum otherwise with an outlet to both access the course content and participate in class discussions that, without the use of technology, they would not be able to access. By implementing the use of technology in the classroom, students will have a greater opportunity to use these devices for purposes such as speech devices, text readers, or electronic forms of course curriculum that allow students to access their lessons better than they would not be able to access without implementation of this technology.
Being a student at GCU means implementing the Christian worldview of compassion by treating each student in a manner that would serve to uplift each student and provide services to these students to promote individual flourishing. To implement human flourishing in the classroom, I will seek to provide each student with the appropriate accommodations and modifications needed to access their curriculum while also leading with the knowledge that each student is capable of learning and can learn. Not only is behaving legally and ethically in the classroom part of teacher protocol, but it is also a major value of teaching in the Christian way and that we should not only be leading by the laws of the land but should also be leading by the laws of God and what his words appoint us to do as educators. To lead ethically in the classroom, I will ensure that I am providing each student, regardless of race, ethnicity, or background, with the same opportunities, kindness, and support as each student, as God has appointed us to treat each other with human kindness and to love thy neighbor. In all, leading by the Christian worldview means being dedicated to the practice and advocacy of our students, not only within the classroom but within their lives, and making a difference for each student each day, no matter how big or small.
