Morality, Knowledge, and Religion Assignment
The terms "knowledge, morality and religion" had very specific meanings to those in the founding era. “Public acknowledgment and adoration of God was universally affirmed
and practiced by every aspect of our government in its early years. Our Founders considered it to
be an indispensable element to the success of our form of government.” Mark A. Beliles & Douglas S. Anderson, Contending for the Constitution 58 (2005). Our founding fathers had a strong belief in God, dedicating their time and knowledge to create our Constitution and Bill of Rights with a Christian worldview. Many other foundations of our laws are also established based on religion, even so that when “our first president took the oath of office with his hand on a Bible opened to Deuteronomy, chapter 28
.” Id.
at 57. “If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the LORD your God: You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country.” Deuteronomy
28:1-3 (NIV). In Washington’s speech, he acknowledges that God is the nations guidance. “No people can be bound to acknowledge and adore the Invisible Hand in which conducts the affairs of men more than the people of the United States.” Id
. at 58. Also mentioned
in our readings, the words morality, knowledge, and religion were the pillars of the foundation of
our government. Morality means to have a Christian character, knowledge means to have a Biblical worldview, and religion means faith in Christianity. Another example of why it was believed our nation would only succeed if based on these principles was Thomas Jefferson. He was the state’s highest elected official and he had “no problem publicly advocating religion, and not just any religion, but specifically Christianity. He asked for public prayer for “all Ministers of the Gospel,” which excludes all religions other than 2
Christianity, and he asked for public prayer to spread the light of “christian knowledge,” and no other.” Id
. at 66. Our founding fathers maintained a strong religious worldview. I believe that God choose those leaders to establish how our nation should be lead back then and even more now. “Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except
that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.” Romans 13:1 (NIV)
In conclusion I believe those same beliefs can still be the basis for the success in our now religious diverse America. God established this nation from the very beginning, by being that divine intervention when our constitution was being drafted, to the people he appointed to lead our nation as well. I believe that God works in the hearts and minds of those in government to accomplish His purpose, but there is also an enemy who works to overthrow was God has set in stone. We must remain faithful to His teachings and understand that a leader with a Christian worldview should lead this nation. “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps.” Proverbs 16:9 (NIV)
