`In order to determine whether Christian ethics is relativist or absolutist.
The words must
be defined in order to provide relative context to this assignment. Relativism is defined as the
doctrine that knowledge, truth, and morality exists. Absolutism is defined as the acceptance of or
belief in absolute principles in political, philosophical, ethical, or theological matters.
Christian
ethics as it relates to relativism can be illustrated as what is considered right or wrong. May vary
from person to person depending on who they are. This means what is deemed wrong in the eyes
of others may not be deemed wrong in the eyes of the person committing the act. This is all
subjective because it all depends on the morals and ideals of the individual portrayed in this
illustration. Christian ethics as it refers to absolutism refers to what is right or wrong regardless
of what people think. This ideal is not subjective and does not depend on what people think.
Ethical absolutism refers to concrete principles that are not based on opinion.
A weakness of ethical absolutism as it relates to being a Christian. Essentially is that
those that adopt an absolutist belief are not tolerable of those who oppose their beliefs. This is
because they are so firm in their beliefs that. They do not accept another way of life as right other
than theirs.
So, the weakness of ethical absolutism is that believers are intolerable of other
religions and ways of life. A weakness of ethical relativism is that moral beliefs are based on
social groups and norms. Relativism states that a person is subject to their own opinion. When it
comes to determining what is right and wrong. Christian ethics is absolutist because there are
clear rules and guidelines in the bible. That make it very clear what is deemed right and wrong. It
is not up to the individual to determine what is right or wrong because everything is outlined in
the bible. (Robertson. Q, 2014)
Romans 14:15 states: Yet if another brother is grieved because of your food, you are no
longer working in love. Do not destroy with your food, the one for whom Christ died. This
scripture is referring to a relativist ideal state of mind. The scripture is referring to showing grace
and tolerance. To those who may not have the same beliefs or religion as you. So do not destroy
someone who doesn’t look the way you, talk the way you, eat the way you do, and live the way
you do. Relativism comes into play because this scripture is based on tolerance of others and
their beliefs. As Christians we should be non-judgmental when comes to engaging and
interacting with individuals. Whose religion may not give the same freedoms or abilities that we
have as Christians.
