Philosophy Statement
My personal philosophy as an early childhood educator is that each child is a unique
individual and that all children can learn
. Our programs provide inclusive settings that recognize
children's varied abilities, interests, needs, and learning styles. I believe children learn best
through meaningful play. I believe that if a child feels like they can truly be themselves the
learning possibilities are endless.
I believe that my role as a teacher in an early childhood classroom is to help guide the
children with the help of a
thorough curriculum in order to gain a strong foundation for their
future education. I feel it is vital as a preschool teacher to set a good example for my students
because they are always learning from what they see us doing. As a preschool teacher I will be
prepared and ready to make sure each student feels they are in a
safe and secure environment
.
My first step in addressing all the different types of learning styles is to have the
knowledge and understanding of the various learning styles and then provide each student with
a variety of learning experiences to meet their individual needs. Regardless of their learning
style, students learn best when you give them the freedom to work at their own pace. I like to
provide a number of hands-on, multisensory activities. This high level of engagement will help
hold their attention and keep them focused on the task at hand, even if there are distractions.
To handle any conflict that occurs between students I will start by listening to both sides
of the story. Then I will make sure Listen empathetically and acknowledge emotions by
repeating what you I understand the issues to be. With both of the students we will come up
with some possible solutions
. Then we will evaluate each solution to figure out which one fits
the situation best. This will work because each student will feel heard and be more likely to
agree to the solution because they played a part in figuring it out.
You can go a long way toward fostering a culturally inclusive classroom by demonstrating
your own desire to be culturally aware. I like to ask students to share their stories and relate
their cultural experiences to the lessons you’re teaching. Cultural diversity does not require you
to have diverse expectations. I try to maintain the same expectations for all students. Of course,
some students will need special accommodation, but we want all students to be the best they
can be. I really try to instill in my students the belief that no matter what race, religion, sexual
orientation, ethnicity, disabilities, language, or economic situation we all deserve to be treated
with respect and understanding.
Building on the inclusiveness, a way I like to include parents in my curriculum is
by inviting each of them to come and share anything about their family culture that they want
the other students to know more about. With this I would like to come together with each
parent that chooses to do this and come up with an activity for the class. This will hopefully help
the children get to know each other better and be exposed to many diverse cultures.
I like to be available as much as possible to my colleagues and the families of my children
in my class, to an extent of course. One of my favorite ways of everyone staying in touch in the
same place is some different apps. My favorite one is Class Dojo. In this app you can post things
for everyone to see, or you can directly message each other if the subject is more personal. This
helps keep all the comments and concerns everyone has in one organized, easily accessible
place. All comments, concerns and criticism are welcome and encouraged.
