Provide an example of how your personal values correlate with the NASW Code of Ethics. Provide an
example of how your personal values might conflict with the NASW Code of Ethics. How might you
handle this?
This discussion question is informed by the following EPAS Standard:
1: Demonstrate Ethical and Professional Behavior

I feel as if I have values that correlate with the NASW Code of Ethics. The one that stands out the most to
me is the commitment to my clients. In the NASW Code of Ethics it says, “Social workers’ primary
responsibility is to promote the well-being of clients. In general, clients’ interests are primary. However,
social workers’ responsibility to the larger society or specific legal obligations may, on limited occasions,
supersede the loyalty owed clients, and clients should be so advised” (NASW, 2023). With that being
said, I value the time that I have with my clients, so I am going to show them that they have my full
attention and I want to work with them to better understand what it is they need from me. It is
important to me to have a strong bond with my clients because it shows that they can trust me and
know that I will only report things that need to be reported.
An example of when my values did conflict with the Code of Ethics, there was one time that one of my
clients had told me that they were going to harm themselves because they couldn’t “take it anymore,” so
they wanted to basically end their lives, well, I made sure to tell them that it was something that I
needed to report because it was in their best interest for the safety of them. They were understanding
and I think it made our relationship stronger because they knew that I was there for them and wanted to
see that they remained safe. This was a hard one to decide what to do because I didn’t want to break the
trust that I had with my client, but I also didn’t want to break the trust I had with the guardians of the
client either. So, I did end up telling the guardians and we then had a family meeting to discuss what
further actions needed to take place for the well-being of the client.
