What Really Motivates People to be Honest in Business? 1. Adam Smith believed that people were motivated by self-interest and their decision-making involved a cost-benefit analysis. Immanuel Kant believed that people had core values that influenced their decision-making without regard to costs or benefits. Who do you agree with? Could they both be right? While I think that both are right to a degree I personally believe in Kant. I believe most people have an internal conscious that helps them decipher between right and wrong in their own opinion we must keep in mind though that everyone has their own perception of right and wrong. I believe a lot of that has to do with the environment in which they are raised and the people who surround them in their everyday lives. 2. What is a protected value? Give an example of a protected value that one might have in regard to their professional life. A protected value is “where you are willing to pay the price to uphold the value to withstand the temptation to give-in,” according to Alexander Wagner. An example I think of is a car salesman. Many of them make commission, and selling someone a vehicle that they would not be able to afford just for the commission.. 3. Does the coin-toss experiment support Adam Smith’s theory or does it support Immanuel Kant’s theory? Explain. With 65% of the participants being honest in the experiment it does support Kant’s theory. 4. Dr. Wagner believes that choosing the right people is more effective in having an ethical work environment than having codes of conduct and incentives/disincentives. Do you agree with him? Why or why not? Personally yes, I agree with him. By having the right people in the workplace, they will already be doing their jobs correctly and will not need incentives to achieve success. Now showing appreciation after the fact for a job well done is what most people will respond to. That could be as simple as a personalized note or even a cash bonus. This lets your workers know you are not only observant of their success but that they are appreciated in the work that they do and will continue that path without having set incentives to go after.
