Cohesion and Coherence
Directed Learning Activity—Style 02
Essential Question
What are cohesion and coherence and how will they help improve the flow of my writing?
Purpose
Upon completion of this activity, students will be able to define the terms “cohesion” and
“coherence” and will be able to revise sentences for both cohesion and coherence.
This DLA should take approximately 45 minutes to complete.
Before You Begin
To complete this DLA, you will need to view the video entitled “
Creating Cohesion and Coherence
.” This
video is based on
Style: Lessons in Clarity and Grace
by Williams and Bizup. Respond to the following
about the video:
1) Define the word “cohesion.”
Cohesion refers to the quality of a text that makes its elements (such
as sentences and paragraphs) logically connected and unified. It involves the use of linguistic
devices and organizational techniques to create a smooth and interconnected flow of ideas,
ensuring that the different parts of a text work together effectively.
2) What are some ways that writers can achieve cohesion?
- Transitional Words and Phrases: Using words like "however," "therefore," and "moreover" can
help link ideas.
- Pronouns: Consistent use of pronouns helps maintain clarity and connection between sentences
and paragraphs.
- Repetition: Repeating key words or phrases can reinforce the relationship between ideas.
- Parallel Structure: Structuring sentences and phrases in a parallel manner enhances cohesion.
- Logical Order: Presenting ideas in a logical sequence helps readers follow the progression of
thought.
- Synonyms and Antonyms: Careful use of synonyms and antonyms can create connections
between concepts.
3) Define “coherence.”
Coherence refers to the quality of a text that makes its ideas clear, logical,
and easy to understand. A coherent piece of writing is one where all parts are logically connected,
and the overall message is conveyed effectively to the reader.
4) What are the four elements of coherence?
- Unity: All the ideas in a text should be related to the main topic or thesis, avoiding unnecessary
and unrelated information.
- Logical Order: The ideas should be presented in a sequence that makes sense to the reader,
following a logical progression.
- Consistency: The use of consistent language, style, and tone throughout the text contributes to
coherence.
- Clarity: Clear and straightforward expression of ideas, avoiding ambiguity or confusion,
enhances coherence.
Assignment
Below are three passages that lack cohesion and coherence. These passages are drawn from
Style:
Lessons in Clarity and Grace

th
edition. Using the tips outlined in the video, revise these three
passages.
Passage 1: Put Old Information First
Rewrite this passage so old information begins each sentence and new information follows the old.
The drop in unemployment figures and inflation, and the increase in the GNP testifies the president's
success at first. When he assumed office, there were two aims - the recovery of the American economy
and the modernization of America into a military power. But the increase in our involvement in
international conflict without any clear set of political goals indicates less success, thus increases in the
military budget and a good deal of saber rattling pleased the American voter.
Passage 2: Using Transitions Appropriately
According to Williams and Bizup, “some writers try to fake coherence” by using transition words that
don’t necessarily “signal logical connections.” Rewrite this passage so that logical connections are made
between sentences.
How the press portrays the president
influences his popularity because the press is the major medium
of interaction between the president and the people. Both reporters and the president are human
beings who are subjected to error and favoritism, therefore it should report on the president
objectively . People act differently in public than they do in private so it is important to know the
whole person, his environment, upbringing, and education.
Passage 3: Common Themes
You don’t want your writing to be monotonous, so, while you want to repeat common themes, you don’t
necessarily want to repeat the same words. Rewrite this passage to eliminate the monotony while
keeping the common themes.
"Moral climate" is created when an objective moral standard for treating people is accepted by
others. It results from norms of behavior that are accepted by society whereby if people conform they
are socially approved, or if they don't, they are shunned. In this light, the moral climate acts as a
reason to refrain from saying or doing things that the community does not support. It also encourages
individuals to conform to a moral standard and apply that standard to their own.
