Part B: Evaluate the Argument
Argument Evaluation Questions
NOTE:
When complete, save this Word doc with the title Evaluation_PatherID where you replace “PantherID” with
your PantherID number. Then submit this Word document along with the PDF of your argument map.
1.
Choose at least two premises
and evaluate them
for truth
For
each
premise that you evaluate, type below a full
explanation (including at least one reason that supports
your claim) of why you think that premise is true or false, or explain why you are not sure whether it is true or
false.
If you evaluate a premise that has a co-premise you MUST evaluate both parts
.
●
NOTE:
Feel free to use Google to help you evaluate whether a premise is true or false, although this is not
necessary. If you do use any web sources, just be sure to cite them in your note.
Premise 1: Studies show that smartphone use can cause anxiety and depression when a large amount of time is spent on
social media platforms.
1a: Activity on some platforms can also increase the possibility of encountering negative comments and bullying.
Based on the sub-premise we can assume that negative comments and bullying are a cause of anxiety and depression. This
would then make our argument that kids are harmed by having their own smartphones, true. Therefore, the premise and
sub-premise are true. This is also evidenced by a study(observational) conducted by the National Library of Medicine.

Premise 2: Smartphones provide kids with unsupervised internet access that can expose children to harmful content.
2b: Kids can fall prey to online predators posing as other kids online.
This premise is true because online predators are an example of harmful content that children can be exposed to when their
parents do not monitor their children’s internet use. This ties into kids having their own unmonitored smartphones being
harmful. The Beau Biden Foundation supports the claim that children are exposed to predators because of them posing as
other kids and unsupervised internet use.

2.
Choose at least two inferences
and evaluate them for strength/weakness
For
each
inference that you choose, write below your explanation of why you think that inference is strong or
weak, including at least one reason that support your claim.
We can reasonably and strongly infer that smartphone use can increase anxiety and depression as well as
exposure to sexual predators and is essentially detrimental to young children. Both inferences are strong because
of proven examples. For example, recently, a 7-year-old girl was in contact with sex offenders on Pinterest. The
sex offender sent sexually explicit content to the child. A popular example of depression caused by social use via
smartphone is the suicide of Adriana Kuch who was 14 years old. The 14-year-old was physically assaulted and
cyberbullied on social media.
3.
Give a verdict on the argument overall
Write below whether you find the main claim to be good or bad AND be sure to include at least two very specific
reasons that support
y
our overall verdict.
The overall argument or claims is good because of the very strong premises to back it. Like the increase in mental
health issues and exposure to sexual content. Which are very strong topics within society. A 14-year-old
committing suicide because of cyberbullying and a 7-year-old being subjected to a sexual predator online are
enough to support smartphones being harmful to kids.
