Read John O'Sullivan article and answer the question below based on that article.
Give two reasons why O'Sullivan says the United States is destined to be "the great nation of
futurity" – in other words, what qualities or characteristics does the United States have that make
it destined to be a leader of and an example to other nations?

This is "American Progress," painted by John Gast in 1872.
It is a representation of Manifest
Destiny.
The angel-like figure represents America.
On her forehead is the "star of liberty" and
she carries a school book and is stringing telegraph wire on the poles following her.
Following
her also are railroads, white farmers (bottom right), white pioneers.
Running before her are
Indians and buffalo.
3. Give an example of how this picture illustrates the concept of "Manifest Destiny" as discussed
in lecture.
In your example you should describe an element in the picture and then how it
reflects a concept of Manifest Destiny as given in lecture.
Make sure you discuss both the
element of the picture AND the specific information from lecture it reflects.
(Don't forget to
read the description of the picture as well as look at the picture.)
NOTE:
This must be 100% your OWN analysis.
4.
According to your text in the section "The Road to War," what happened when Mexico
refused to sell California to the US - what action did Polk take (not just plan) after that, and what

What did Polk do then, and what was his justification for it?
Read the Charles Sumner article and answer the questions below based on that article.
6.
How does Sumner characterize the territory between the Nueces and the Rio Grande rivers?

How does he characterize Polk's sending troops into that region?
How does he characterize
the Mexican response to those troops?

Section 4 – Now What?
21.
Some people in the US saw the US as a unique land of liberty and opportunity and wanted to
spread that liberty and opportunity (as well as civilization generally) to others through expansion.
This was echoed in the theory of "manifest destiny," which was used as a justification for the war
with Mexico.
However, some people in the US thought that it was really the (often economic) benefits the US
would receive through expansion that were just as or more important to the US than spreading
liberty or civilization.
These people sometimes spoke out against the war.
Both these views are brought out in the questions on your worksheet, as are some of the results
of manifest destiny for the US and for other peoples.
Do you think the US still believes in any of the ideas involved in "manifest destiny" in any way
today?
If so how?
If not why not?
What is your definition of what the US's "manifest destiny"
should be today?
In other words, what do you think should be the guiding principle or goal of
the US today?
How does your idea of manifest destiny reflect the idea of "who gets what?"
Your answer to this question should address all parts of the question, show thoughtful
consideration of the issues in the question, display proper grammar and spelling, and be at least
two full paragraphs long (a paragraph is at least 4-5 complete sentences) to earn the full 5 points.
Total:
25 points
