REQUIRED BEFORE CLASS
1.
What three factors might lead the Amish to stay in the church, and what
three factors may lead them to leave the church (from reading)?
Three factors that may lead the Amish to leave the church are when they have
lost their core of simplicity, community, and faithfulness (Growing Up Amish, 276).
Three factors that might lead the Amish to stay in the church are the values that
come with farming which are hard work, simplicity, and separation from the world
(Growing Up Amish, 277).
2.
Discuss the purpose of college in non-Amish mainstream American life
beyond just access to more job opportunities. (use reference
College
Life
by Grigsby in your response)
There are many reasons why people choose to go to college.
One reason is that
it prepares you for the real world and what your future career holds.
Also, college
teaches you how to live on your own and teaches you real life skills and lessons
(College Life by Grigsby, 102).
3.
Discuss three ways that college is experienced in diverse ways using
examples from the text or personal experiences (consider where
students come from, city vs. urban, typologies (see below), gender,
socio-economic background, Greek/non-Greek, race, etc. Be prepared
to update and modify in class, especially if you are confused about
typologies)
College is experienced in many ways.
Having only been in college for a year and
a half, I have already experienced so much.
The main thing that I have
experienced in college that is different from high school is being involved in
Greek life and in a sorority.
Because Mizzou is one of the best journalism
schools in America, people come from all over the country.
Those people are
able to experience living on their own outside of their hometown, and learning to
grow while far away from their parents' help.
4.
One way that students experience college differently is based on
student priorities on how they spend their time. According to the
College Life
by Grigsby reading, most college students can be
characterized by a combination of primary and secondary typologies.
Explain the concept of typology and how it can help describe diverse
student experiences.
Typology is described as a concept that is used in education to understand
diverse student experiences based on certain characteristics or behaviors.
It can
help describe diverse student experiences by what they said about their college
experience, such as, what their purpose for being in college was, what they did
and how they spent their time, their different goals in college and for their future,
and what also matters to them (College Life by Grigsby).
5.
Next, describe the combination of two typologies best describe your
approach to college life. Please state the typologies, describe them, and
state why you think this combination of typologies describes your
approach to college. [Remember, when discussing your paper, you
must discuss the context and background around these typologies. Be
prepared to update and modify in class, especially if you are confused
about typologies]
The two typologies that I think best describe my approach to college life are The
Careerist College Student Cultural Orientation Ideal Type and The Collegiate
College Student Cultural Orientation Ideal Type.
The Careerist College Student
Cultural Orientation Ideal Type basically means that you are there with a goal of
graduating with a certain degree and pursuing a professional career with that
degree.
The Collegiate College Student Cultural Orientation Ideal Type means
enjoying the activities that are tied to the social aspects of college life, such as
sororities, fraternities, intramural sports, etc.
These typologies are the most
important to me because this is what I came into college wanting to experience.
Finding a career that I am passionate about and taking classes that will help me
achieve my goals of getting a degree in that career is the first important thing for
me in college.
I have always been taught that getting good grades and doing
good in school will pay off and get you far in life, and that is what I came to
college to do.
Also, going to college and experiencing the normal college life was
something I was also looking forward to.
I played soccer my whole life and
always thought I was going to play in college.
Later in life I realized that wasn’t
for me and I would rather focus on school while also engaging in college
activities, such as joining a sorority and playing intramural sports.
So far I have
joined a sorority and played intramural volleyball and soccer through my sorority.
Overall, out of all of the typologies I think these two are the most important to me
and constantly remind me what I value most about college.
6.
Describe a transformative college experience that shaped your thinking
around an issue/topic and/or describe a key decision you have made in
college around career, approach to social life/work, religion, relating to
people differently, etc.
A transformative college experience that shaped my thinking was that for a lot of
people including myself you go into college thinking you want to pursue a career
in one thing but change your mind a lot on what you want to major in.
My whole
life I have always wanted to be a teacher, but then when I got to college I realized
that wasn’t for me and I was going to major in criminology because that is what
interested me the most.
At the end of first semester and after going through my
discovery class, I realized I wanted to major in Marketing.
I have stuck with this
ever since and really enjoy my classes.
I believe that the business classes I am
taking will prepare me not only for my degree but also the real world.
I have also
learned from many people that in a business setting you will work with a diverse
group of people, and I believe that is really important to experience in your life at
one point or another.
IN CLASS
1.
What are the three main things you learn about college student culture
from this clip? What are some other examples of college life in the
media? How do these main messages connect to Devil's Playground?
The three main things I learned from this clip was that the reality of college life is
not just focusing on your career.
During this clip there were a lot of peer
interactions, and no parts about the learning environment that takes place in
college. Both the
Devil's Playground
and this clip portrayed the extreme fun you
can have in college rather than the typical college stigma around going to get
your degree and graduate.
Some other examples of college life in the media
may include Pitch Perfect, Monsters University, and Animal House.
2.
What motivated you to come to college, and why Mizzou? Write the
name of at least one peer you talked with and why they came to
Mizzou/attended college.
I chose to come to Mizzou for college because it’s not too close and not too far
away from home.
Also, my mom went here so that influenced my decision as
well.
Mali: Grew up in a Mizzou family, not too far from home because she is from
Kansas City and both of her brothers went to Mizzou.
3.
What typologies might Van Wilder be and why?
I think the typology that represents Van Wilder the most is The Collegiate College
Student Cultural Orientation Ideal Type because this is the non-learning part of
college and focused more on the activities and social aspects of college, such as
sororities, fraternities, and organized sports.
During the clip I didn’t see any
scenes of him being in a school setting and he was just more focused on the
social aspects of college with girls, and partying, and playing games.
