In this week's reflection I’m using content given to us from the draft 2 assignment, as well as Mondays and Wednesdays lecture. Seminars are cancelled this week to work on getting are Core training certificate done, which will provide me content for next week's reflection. What stood out to me this week is the amount we touched on ethical research. I've always been aware that it is very important to make sure when it comes to conducting research that ethics are always involved as that ensures the safety of the clients and promotes well-being, honesty, dignity and a trusting relationship. Yet it was new to me how in depth we need to look at each part of the study with what and who is being studied, if using a control group or even if the initial hypothesis is ethical. As we looked at trauma research in our second draft assignment there was a lot that needed to be considered as this is a very touchy topic and no two cases would be similar or have the same emotional outcome. How the researcher asked the questions, the amount of breaks they gave and when it was a good time to stop the study, all had to be considered on a minute to minute basis depending on how the participant was doing and it was fully up to them with what they were comfortable with saying or if they needed to receive any help for what was happening. What isn't so new this week was the ethics that come with working with Indigenous communities as this was stuff we touched on in the past when it came to working with these types of minority groups, we learned that a lot has to do with the land they reside on. These communities view their land as sacred, they embodied a respectful relationship with their land, which we as a researcher need to be considerate of. Lastly, how I want this content to impact the way I learn is to be more hyper aware of ethics when I eventually get into doing research myself. I plan to join the Guelph family research study in the summer. This is my first time helping out with research and I want to make sure what I'm asked to do is ethical towards my participants, to myself and towards the land we are doing the research on. I want to make sure what we are asking are participants, aligns with their capabilities, based on their age or being aware if they may have a visible or invisible disability which may limit them to meet certain criteria. Even though this is a study done by the school so ethics would be kept, it's still good to be aware if something seems off to me.
