Workplace Ethics
The video “Everything Wrong with Workplace Ethics” by DuPont Sustainable Solutions shows a group of employees who display absurdly unethical behavior in their workplace. The video takes place right before a meeting is held by their Human Resources Manager regarding their performance and what led up to the group needing a meeting in the first place. The video shows each worker's different scenarios of unethical behavior before the meeting (ConsultDSS, 2013).
What Was Wrong?
1. For starters, just 25 seconds into the video, ethics are taken as a joke with lines such are "the media create ethics," which is a big red flag already against the company and the types of people they tend to hire and lack of organizational ethics (ConsultDSS, 2013, 0:25).
2. An employee comes to work late while eating breakfast and asks what is for lunch. He breezes
over that he is late because he did not get caught by his superior (ConsultDSS, 2013, 0:04). 3. While waiting for their superior or Human Resource Manager, I assume, the workers make pointless conversation about lunch and banter about how ethics are not real instead of preparing for their meeting or discussing the ethics they said are not real or discussing work-related matters
(ConsultDSS, 2013, 0:30). 4. The first thing out of one of the employee’s mouths when their superior, Carla, walks up is that he thinks they should have "Chinese food" for lunch (ConsultDSS, 2013, 0:36).
5. They flashback to their expense report meeting, and it is a rollercoaster of unethical and fraudulent behavior.
Mercedes gets her hair done on the company's time and funds (ConsultDSS, 2013, 0:53).
3
Aaron fakes good performance reviews on social media and blatantly disregards the policies and legal aspects of the legal department (ConsultDSS, 2013, 1:10).
One of the employees suggests they should use his cousin as a distributor at the company he is getting paid by (ConsultDSS, 2013, 1:28).
The last one depicted is more concerned about using company time and money for lunch (ConsultDSS, 2013, 0:32).
What Should Be Covered in The Meeting
Though this video takes place in displaying the events that led up to the conduct meeting being called and we do not see what the Human Resources Manager covers in said meeting, some things that should be reiterated or discussed in the conference include but are not limited to: revisiting the company’s purpose and mission statement, going over the code of conduct and company guidelines, and focus more on adopting the Public Interest and Integrity Principles as outlined by The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (Johnson, 2022).
In conclusion
The workers depicted in the video have much work to do in ethics training and principles,
and hopefully, the human resources meeting they endured was informative and reformative. All workers depicted need to uphold their company’s values better while working on their personal ethics reflected in their careers.
