The Impact of Artificial Intelligence in the Workplace Thomas Gebka University of Arizona Global Campus PHI 103: Informal Logic Christopher Myers 11/06/2023 Week 3 Assignment
Introduction With the rise of Artificial Intelligence in the workplace, it is important to understand the underlying impact AI (Artificial Intelligence) has and how it affects the workforce. There is evidence that AI could increase productivity; however, employers are also warned to be cautious when using AI technology to assist with decision making. With the potential risks AI has it is important for me to understand what those risks are and how it will affect everyone around today and in the foreseeable future. The question I will be answering is how Artificial Intelligence is impacting business today. Source #1: How will AI change your workplace culture Dixon, L. (2023). Not if but when: How will AI change your workplace culture? Rochester Business Journal, 38 (39), 35-35,37. https://www.proquest.com/trade-journals/not-if-when-how-will-ai-change- your-workplace/docview/2784461437/se-2 The source supports the premise for the use of Artificial Intelligence in the workplace. The author states that: 58 percent of companies using AI says it increases team efficiency and decision-making quality. Emphasis on everyone. Because when we deploy a new technology, the aim is to benefit as many people as possible: team members, clients, vendors, and our community.” (Dixon et al., 2023) Furthermore, the article explains the positives of utilizing AI such as; More time for higher-level thinking, Increased Innovation, and improving work morale. The takeaway from this source is that when businesses find a use for AI, and they can hand off the responsibilities of repetitive tasks it opens the door for employees to be more innovative. Therefore, “we need to figure out how to harness the technology and put it to use for the greater good. Businesses will be well poised to see positive outcomes as they integrate AI applications.” (Dixon et al., 2023).
Source #2: Hollywood writers’ battle against AI By JAKE COYLEAP Film Writer. (2023). In Hollywood writers’ battle against AI, humans win (for now). In AP English Worldstream - English . Associated Press DBA Press Association. This source is voting against the use of Artificial Intelligence in the workplace. As mentioned in the article the Hollywood screenwriters went on a 148-day long strike which “guardrails against the use of artificial intelligence in one of the first major battles over generative AI in the workplace.” (Coyleap et al., 2023). The article written by a film writer Jake Coyleap goes over how AI material can be used to undermine a writer’s credit. They say that AI is dehumanizing the workforce. The use of AI is uncertain and rapidly developing, this is making people uncertain on what will happen to their roles and jobs in the near future. Therefore, actors, screenwriters and much of the literary world are voting against the use of artificial intelligence in the workplace. Source #3: Occupational Safety and Health Equity Impact of Artificial Intelligence Fisher, E., Flynn, M. A., Pratap, P., & Vietas, J. A. (2023). Occupational Safety and Health Equity Impacts of Artificial Intelligence: A Scoping Review. International journal of environmental research and public health , 20 (13), 6221. https://doi.org/10.3390/ijerph20136221 . In this source we see a plethora of sources on how AI Is impacting the workplace. The authors objectively identify key gaps that we see in business today and how AI is supporting and revitalizing portions of the workspace. Portions such as reducing the risk of human collision in high-risk industries, increased reliance in productivity tools, and removing patterns of biases present in the decision-making process (Fisher et al., 2023). This source provides clear and

direct reasoning to support the use of its claims for the use of Artificial Intelligence in the workplace. Presentation of the Argument from the Source The primary argument from this source may be represented in standard form: Premise 1: AI may reduce the need for workers to engage in dirty, dangerous, or monotonous work, or to work in extreme conditions such as poor weather and emergency or disaster situations. Premise 2 : AI design and implementation may facilitate the use of more diverse algorithmic training data. Premise 3: AI can increase productivity and automation which will create new jobs. Conclusion: Therefore, AI systems are tools used by employers primarily to make workplaces more efficient and effective. (Fisher et al., 2023) Evaluation of the Argument that AI is beneficial in the workplace This article supports the use of Artificial Intelligence as well as looks at the opposing views and the downside to utilizing AI in the workplace. In other words, the article does not fully support the use of AI in the workplace. Fisher, one of the authors, provides multiple sources of reasoning supporting the premises and how a solid foundation with close monitoring the use of AI can be beneficial in the workplace. If any additional information could be provided to support the premises, I might add specific examples on how AI can help reduce some of the risks in the workplace. As well as how AI can help increase productivity, instead of just stating
facts based on outside sources and cited within the article. Whether someone might have a view that goes against the use of AI in the workplace, they could argue that AI could pose potential risks if implemented poorly without close monitoring. One of the risks we can see on the flip side is AI has the potential of causing job losses in certain industries, where workers are being outperformed; more so in developing countries, or in lower income communities. Discussion of Research on this Topic Artificial Intelligence is an up-and-coming topic in today’s world, especially with the expansion of these technologies being used in multiple applications. Soloy based on AI in the workplace is somewhat of a difficult topic to research as there are only a few scholarly sources that define the benefits and disadvantages of using AI systems. I am not sure if it is because of some type of bias, although I see that most sources tend to fall towards the acceptance of using some form of AI systems in the workplace. It is slightly more difficult to find sources opposed to using AI. The opposing views generally have a statistic that point towards why AI impacts business negatively without presenting information on why AI for example might impact unemployment rates and cause some type of instability in the workplace. Evaluation of Arguments in Scholarly and Non-Scholarly Sources Most of the popular sources did not provide much evidence or reasoning to back up the information provided. It was more so just stating facts which we as the audience do not have a way of knowing where the information came from and how accurately that information was portrayed. In general, we see popular articles trying to grab the attention of multiple viewers and little to no support for the information provided. Whereas in scholarly articles we have authors that are more trusted based on their background and the sources provided to back up
their information. Most of the scholarly sources also had some type of data supporting their arguments from other trusted sources, as well as having those forms of data peer reviewed to make sure they are accurate. Conclusion: Whether reviewing information from scholarly or popular sources it is important to take a step back and review the information in your own terms. Analyzing where the information came from and how accuratly it is portrayed based on the information given. By evaluating arguments in both types of sources I can make my own informed decision on which sources to trust or which source to incorporate into my research. Overall, being able to evaluate both arguments in scholarly and popular sources shapes and helps promote critical thinking, avoiding misinformation and helping to advance my knowledge in an evidence-based manner.
