a. Develop a professional commitment to doing what is right
.
Dr. Hernandez would develop this by: Investigating the
rules of the clinic.
The clinic states that no member of the clinic should come to a meeting/session if they are high or intoxicated. Dr.
Hernandez can add additional reminders of the rules by having the members sign the agreement of the rules before every
session.
b. Acquire familiarity with the code to anticipate situations for ethical planning, or foresee situations that would
require ethical decision making.
What ethical issues should Dr. Hernandez have planned for or have foreseen in this
therapy situation?
Dr. Hernandez should have planned for disagreements between group members. Some group members may want to help
Angela with her situation and find her to be able to support her as she may be telling the truth, on the other hand, some
group members may feel that the rules apply at all costs and should not be bent for certain members as this does not keep
everyone binded.
c. Gather facts about ethical situations from professional organizations and any laws.
Where could Dr. Hernandez get
these facts? Dr. Hernandez would gather these facts from the rules of the local methadone Medicaid clinic, in the contract
a member has to sign and waiver as well as the state policy on group therapy clinics. She can gather this information from
other psychologists in the same line of work.
After the problem happened:
d. Try to understand the perspectives of everyone involved and consult with colleagues.
Whose perspectives does Dr.
Hernandez need to consider AND what do you think other psychologists at the clinic would tell her?
Dr. Hernandez needs to consider Angela’s perspective and situation. Angela states she is in danger with her safety. Being
able to have a safe space and support in situations that Angela is in, is necessary. Another perspective to consider is the
group members. The group members will have a different perspective on the group therapy clinic after a decision is made.
This can either help strengthen or deteriorate to morals the group holds. I believe other psychologists would tell Dr.
Hernandez to consider the safety of an individual. This is because the multicultural virtue of the openness to others allows
us to understand others and help them in their time of need with the best desire in mind.
e. Use first four steps to generate alternatives, and evaluate them compared to laws, the APA Ethics Code, ethical
theories, consequences, and policies.
What are two alternative choices Dr. Hernandez could choose in this situation?
Evaluate each of the two choices like Dr. Hernandez would.
There are two alternative choices that can be made: a) Dr. Hernandez can stick with the rules of the clinic and not allow
Angela to take part of the meeting as she has shown up intoxicated and not try to look for her or B) Dr. Hernandez can
end the meeting early and help look for Angela in concerns for her safety.
For Choice A, this decision does not meet the standard for Ethical Commitment as the decision stands in favor of the
group rules and members wishes, not taking in consideration of Angela’s circumstances. This disregards multicultural
virtue and plays a safe role in staying out of trouble and possibly putting someone’s life on the line. This decision follows
the Deontology virtue as the rules abide by everyone and can not be adjusted. This allows for the rules to be considered
and understand that no member can show up to the meeting high or intoxicated which was broken by Angela.
For Choice B, the first part of the APA Ethical code; Ethical Commitment, states to make a decision for desire to make the
right choice, not to stay out of trouble. Making this decision allows the safety of Angela, regardless if the group agrees
with the decision which also displays openness to others. Considering the group members a part of the decision allows for
Ethical Awareness and follows Communitarianism and Feminist Ethics. After reviewing the rules and regulations of the
clinic, it satisfies the Ethical Competence of the decision.
f. Select and implement a course of action.
Which choice do you think Dr. Hernandez should choose? Explain how she
would implement that choice.
I believe Dr. Hernandez would end the session early and help find Angela and her situation. She would implement this
choice by having a discussion with the group and hearing out their opinions. Dr. Hernandez would begin by enforcing the
concern of safety for the group member who has been attending and helping them place themselves in Angela’s shoes and
what kind of support they would like if the members were in Angela’s situation.
g. Monitor and evaluate your choice.
What would Dr. Hernandez need to monitor and how could she evaluate if her
choice was a good one?
Dr. Hernandez would need to monitor the rules of the clinic and how the group members feel about this decision with
considering the safety of Angela. The group members have expressed wanting to end the meeting early in efforts to try to
find Angela. She can evaluate if this is a good choice though the attitudes and efforts displayed by the members.
Supportive members can indicate the right motive behind the decision.
h. Continue/modify your choice if necessary.
If her choice was a good one, she will continue it; but if she finds a
problem with her choice, how might Dr. Hernandez need to alter that original choice?
Dr. Hernandez can create and enforce new rules upon the clinic. If another member shows up to a meeting being drunk or
intoxicated then there will need to be consequences placed. Members should be warned that such events will be
investigated to continue to participate and there shall be policies put in place to help in these situations as well as protect
the clinic from lies to bend the rules.
