Hello everyone, My revised thesis is as follows:
Local landlords in the metro-Atlanta community should remove breed restrictions from rental housing agreements to promote more dog adoptions, to increase tenants in their rental properties, and to promote health in the community. Originally, I identified key stakeholders in my community issue as local landlords as well
as local animal shelters, but I believe that focusing more on local landlords as my audience could
help me with a more targeted argument. According to CM220 Unit 4 Reading and Resources (n.d.), knowing the target audience allows a writer to anticipate the “reasoning and evidence that the audience will expect…[and the] tone and level of formality” that is necessary. This information helped me to understand that fine tuning my audience would be beneficial to constructing a sound argument. Local landlords are also a community that you don’t often hear from when it comes to social movements regarding emptying animal shelters and ending the stigma against certain breeds for “aggressive” behavior. I believe that most stakeholders would agree that at the end of the day, dogs are dogs, and no matter the breed, there is always a certain level of risk. A chihuahua and a rottweiler could show the same signs of aggression, but almost 100% of the time a chihuahua would be approved on the application of a lease rather than a rottweiler. Landlords need to protect themselves from insurance risks due to “accidents” caused by aggressive dogs. After referring to the Learning Activity “Choosing & Using Keywords,” I believe that three search terms I could use to find evidence for the common ground between stakeholders would be “landlords,” “breed restrictions,” and “rental housing.” I think that these search terms will keep my results on topic and could also generate a wide range of results. When searching
these terms at the PG Library, I found an article entitled, “‘Pets Negotiable’: How Do the Perspectives of Landlords and Property Managers Compare with Those of Younger Tenants with Dogs?”, which was written by Taryn Graham, Katrina Milaney, Cindy Adams, and Melanie Rock
published in the MDPI 2018 Journal. I chose this article because I found it valuable to have information from a peer reviewed journal that illustrated perspectives from both landlords and tenants regarding pets residing in a rental property.
The main idea of the article was to understand the perspective on pets from landlords and property managers, as well as understand how these perspectives affect tenants with dogs. The article states that a main reason for the relinquishment of animals is rental restrictions. I felt that this information directly related to the need for more dog adoptions, because it gives reason to the number of dogs in shelters to begin with. In addition, the article identifies that tenants experience many difficulties when trying to find rental housing, including having to compromise on neighborhood and housing quality, “which held consequences for their health and that of their
pets” (Graham et. al., 2018). I believe that this information could be useful in my argument to explain how the stance of landlords on pets in rental housing actually does affect the health of their tenants, and therefore the community. I plan to use reliable information that suggests that having a dog in a residence improves mental health and physical health. My question for fellow classmates is as follows: Does anyone have any suggestions for background research based on the perspectives of landlords and why they have certain breed restrictions? I looking to outline possible solutions to their hesitations, to argue my point that by removing breed restrictions they could gain more tenants. Also, do you have any suggestions on what research I could use to find out how to appeal to landlords that they should care about the
amount of dogs in shelters, and that they have a huge role in promoting dog adoptions by reducing pet restrictions?
