Quantitative and qualitative are both ways to conduct research, but with different characteristics and philosophical assumptions. The assumptions underlying both approaches will shape the research design, methods, and the interpretation of the findings.
Quantitative: Is the collection of analysis of numerical data (Calhoun et al., 2019). This is heavily relied on statistical analysis and the mathematical models to help predict the conclusions. This type of research is usually structured b a standardized approach and measures the variables. These can
be seen as surveys, experiments, and statistical analysis (Calhoun et al., 2019). The philosophical assumptions are seen as the objective reality that can be measured and overall observed.
Qualitative: Focuses primarily on exploring and to understand within depth (Holloway & Galvin, 2023). This is done by collecting non-numerical data by emphasizing the meaning and the subjective experiences. This can be seen through interviews, observations, and textual analysis (Holloway & Galvin, 2023). The philosophical assumptions are reviewed from constructivism and interpreting to help realize the subjective realities and the importance of the social of culture contexts.
The comparison between the two: They both uses data collection to come to a conclusion and it is both based off of a selected sample size. They both have to analysis the data in order to make a conclusion. They both have to aim for the generalizability for the specific group or population that will be made the variables.
It is meaningful, to me, to use the qualitative research approach due to the personal connection that can be made with the subjective. It allows a deeper
understanding of the research and promotes multiple perceptive. This research also allows for theory development and conceptual frameworks. This allows for new insights and theories to be made through the data that is collected. The participants have a voice. It allows for the experiences to be heard and can lead to more inclusive and comprehensive research findings.
