Compare and contrast the characteristics of quantitative and qualitative research, addressing the philosophical assumptions of both. Based on your review of the assigned readings, identify and describe what you believe to be
meaningful about the qualitative research design and methodology.
Define and describe the context in which qualitative research is applicable.
Qualitative research is described by Creswell et al. (2016) as locating the observers in the world and relies on field notes, interviews, conversations, photographs, recordings, etc. Qualitative research would be applicable when
one is wanting to determine the meaning that people bring.
Discuss the reasons for choosing a qualitative methodology.
Reasons for chosing qualitative research would be when the researcher is focused on determing the expereince of something. A perfect example is in my own research topic, the chosen research topic/question is the experience of clinical mental health counselors when working with members of the LGBTQIA+ community that are deling with religious and family support loss. As the information that I am determining relies on individual experinces, qualitative research design is ideal.
List some subjects in which qualitative analysis is the methodology of choice.
According to Creswell et al. (2016), some subjects that are suited for qualitative research are narrative research which focuses on the individuals expereince, phenomenological research whicjh focuses on the the common expereince, grounded theory which focuses on devolping a theory based on examining individuals that share many of the same things but from differing locations, ethnographic research focuses on examining shared patterns/understanding how culture works, case study research focuses on stdying a case or multiple cases in real life context. Social, medical, and environmental are areas that qualitative research could be used when working to find and understand the expereince of the sample/individuals.
