Hello Mailen, Serious ethical violations could occur if the counselor administering a psychological test did so incorrectly or even administer an outdated assessment. As professional counselors, it is our job to prevent the misuse of obsolete measures and the assessment of data. As mentioned, counselors must consider how a client’s culture affects how they deal with their problems. Can you think of any instances where one’s culture negatively or positively impacted the way they dealt with a problem? There are many ethical violations that could occur if a counselor administered a psychological test incorrectly. Many of the ethical violations are recorded in the American Counseling Association Code of Ethics. First, being a counseling student does not give one the credentials to use these tests because it may cause more harm to the client at this point than be successful (American Counseling Association, 2014, E.6.a). A multicultural concern that can emerge from testing when cultural issues are not considered is how the client's problems are identified and perceived by the person or when cultural issues are not considered when diagnosing mental disorders (American Counseling Association, 2014, E.5.b). If the counselor disclosed the results of the evaluation without considering cultural backgrounds and beliefs, this may bring more damage to the person. The counselor should consider both cultural backgrounds and the positive and negative consequences of sharing the results (American Counseling Association, 2014, E.5.d). The whole section E is written regarding a counselor's competence in the APA guideline. Another ethical violation that I feel like wasn’t mentioned is a counselor practicing outside their jurisdiction (American Counseling Association, 2014, C.2.a). Would you agree that administering a psychological test incorrectly can fall into being an ethical violation? Reference: American Counseling Association. (2014). 2014 ACA code of ethics . https://www.counseling.org/docs/default-source/default-document-library/2014-code- of-ethics-finaladdress.pdf Hello Mailen, There are many instances where personal issues can arise that will conflict with the codes of ethics. In my discussion, I mentioned conducting a psychological test, and while being in
session, the client discloses how she is having an affair with a married man. I have my own biases towards this, so I must always remember to be respectful and put the client and their needs first when in session. If a counselor feels as if they are lost when a conflict or an issue arises, the counselor can always consult with their supervisor and refer back to the American Counseling Association Code of Ethics. As professional counselors, it is important that we address our traumas and barriers as well prior to diving into a counseling session. Would you agree? As a professional counselor, it is important to be aware of our own personal values and ethics. According to the American Counseling Association Code of Ethics, counselors must avoid their personal beliefs and views of clients and respect clients' personal views (ACA, 2014). The ACA Code of Ethics is a guideline to which counselors can refer when it comes to needing assistance in maintaining boundaries between clients, knowing their limitations, and how to refer out if they come across an issue that is out of their scope. If I was providing a psychological test to a counseling client and an issue arose where my personal ethics were in conflict, I would first bring it up to my supervisor during supervision. An example is if I were conducting a psychological test on a client who recently informed me that she is having an affair with a married man. In the beginning, I am sure that I would have a hard time because of a personal ethical standard. I would consult with my supervisor to assist me when dealing with this client. I don’t think referring the client out is necessary, and I would have to put the client’s needs first. Reference: American Counseling Association.
