Melissa A. Richards Southern New Hampshire University PHL-260-Ethical Problem-Solving 2-2 Project Proposal
1. Identify a  professional code of ethics  from a profession or organization that has meaning to you. This is the code of ethics you will use in your project. A. An internet search with keywords including the profession or organization and code of ethics is a good place to start. For examples of professional codes of ethics, consider the following: American Counseling Association (ACA)  Code of Ethics American Medical Association (AMA)  Code of Ethics American Nurses Association (ANA)  Code of Ethics for Nurses American Psychological Association (APA)  Code of Conduct American Society for Public Administration (ASPA)  Code of Ethics Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)  Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct Association of International Certified Professional Accountants (AICPA)  Code of Conduct National Association of Social Workers (NASW)  Code of Ethics National Education Association (NEA)  Code of Ethics for Educators National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE)  Code of Ethics for Engineers Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA)  Code of Ethics Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ)  Code of Ethics A professional code of ethics from the American Psychological Association I select is the ethical code of human relations. The ethical code is appropriate for the field of psychology because psychology professionals focus on using various and different
methods to understand human behavior primarily through social interaction, i.e. psychotherapy. The ethical code of human relations addresses the subfield of discrimination, cooperation with professionals, the costs and interruptions of psychological science, harassment, avoiding harm, and informed consent. 2.Explain what makes the code of ethics you chose particularly  interesting  to you on a personal or professional level. What makes the code of ethics I selected particularly interesting to me on a personal and professional level is my passion for interacting with others to find solutions to their problems. My desired profession requires engagement with the humanities. Personally, I am flattered by the fact that there has been an influx of women in the field and that we are valued. However, until I reach that goal of becoming a Mental Health Therapist, I am constantly surrounded by cruel and uneasy environments. I am a young Caribbean Black woman sunk in debt and bills, so I work extremely hard for the things that I have today. I don’t expect to make a living for myself while being harassed, discriminated against, or harmed in the workplace, and I expect others to respect my wishes of giving informed consent of my own free will. On a professional note, the code of ethics needs to be addressed consistently in the workplace to avoid inflicting harm onto others. Unfair discrimination, sexual harassment, and other forms of harassment could damage the integrity of the company and field. A psychologist is responsible for understanding human behavior and their goal is to improve the quality of life of others. As a psychologist, it’s crucial to engage with humans free of bias and with unconditional

regard. Until I receive my degree, it is unfortunate that I have to witness and experience unethical work environments to the extent of exploiting relationships, impaired objectivity and competence, and illegal authorization of consent. 3.Choose a scenario from the Project Guidelines and Rubric linked from the Supporting Materials section. Explain how this professional code of ethics informs  decision making  within the context of your scenario. A. What is the purpose of this professional code of ethics? B. How does it support decisions? Human relations inform decision making in the context of my scenario and the humanities engaging with one another in and out of the workplace. In example to a client struggling with anxiety and major depression, that client would need a safe space where they are able to think and feel every emotion. In this case, Cognitive-behavioral therapy would benefit the client for the reason of treating unhealthy and negative thoughts. The practitioner has a duty to cooperate with other professionals if necessary and provide care that is indiscriminate and positive. The purpose of human relations is to be a major guide in supporting day-to-day decisions. The professional code of ethics supports decisions by promoting positive communication and the application of emotional intelligence skills. 4.Identify the  origin  of this professional code of ethics. A. Consider the history of your chosen professional organization.
The American Psychological Association was founded in July 1892 by a small group of men who were interested in the “new psychology” (American Psychological Association, 2024). G. Stanley Hall was APA’s first president, and an American psychologist and educator. Also, Hall was the first to receive his doctoral degree in psychology in the United States at Harvard College. His focus was human life development and evolution theory. The organization plays a major role in the United States by assisting the emergence of academic disciplines and the progressive movement in politics. APA merged with other psychological associations after WII to broaden and diffuse the conceptualization of psychology (American Psychological Association, 2024). 5.Explain which  ethical principles  are most important to this professional code of ethics, and why. A. Refer to the list of ethical principles in Module Two Guide. All codes of ethical principles are essential to human relations because they all determine long-term success, and they support positive roles in the workplace and decision-making. The ethical principles consist of unfair discrimination, sexual harassment, other harassment, avoiding harm, multiple relationships, conflict of interest, third-party requests for services, exploitative relationships, cooperation with other professionals, informed consent, psychological services delivered to or through organizations, and interruption of psychological services (American Psychological Association, 2024). The principles promote dignity, respect, integrity, positivity and avoid reputational risks. 6.Identify which  ethical frameworks  include these ethical principles. A. Consult the list of five ethical frameworks described in the Module One Guide.
The ethical framework that includes the ethical principles of human relations is the framework of virtue. The framework prepares a professional’s conscientiousness and supports emotional intelligence. Empathy is critical to maintaining a good relationship with the client and other employees. The cultivation of compassion for others could be a draining skill, however the skill is a requirement in the psychology field and useful when clients are seeking validation of their feelings. The APA has been founded and is surrounded by members who have developed virtues true to humanity, and they are thriving role models for behavior. The American Psychological Association supports objectivity and kindness.
