Mod 10: Working with Diverse Families Activity Activity: My Biases (worth 10 points) This semester we have been examining our own biases. With the Hidden Bias Tests we looked at biases that we may have not even been aware of. Remember the first step in moving past our biases is becoming aware of them. It is easy to say that we do not have a bias, but for most of us that is not true. Biases begin forming in our childhood. Go to the discussion board and review the posts under the section titled “Families Project.” As you reflect on the presentations of your classmates, answer the following questions. 1. Which presentation was most meaningful to you? Why? The presentation I found to be the most meaningful to me was Interracial families because I come from a family where my grandparent are from two different cultures and growing up I only learned about one culture and the other one was never really introduced to men because my parents did not know how to introduce the second language to me. 2. Which family structure were you least familiar with before viewing the presentations? What did you learn about the family structure? How can you learn more about that family structure? I think the military families was the least I was familiar with before viewing the presentation because I was never surrounding by military families and I learned a lot about the family structure and how the structure in those type of families can cause a lot of stress and overall really affect your mental health. I think you can learn more about the family structure by getting to know someone in the school that could be a military family. 3. Select one statistic from the presentations that was surprising or eye-opening for you. How will it change your perception of that family structure? One statistic that was surprising to me was from families with step parents that there are 3.5% of divorced LGBT families in TN alone. It changed by perspective on the family structure because to me it is crazy that divorce has become of the number one thing that can affect a child`s growth and motor skills as well. Another thing just how much stress and challenges that are faced. So, now I understand why some families just have a hard time coping or even children who come from families like that because it’s hard when your two parents can`t get along and you need them the most. 4. Give three strategies you learned from the presentations that will influence your work with families. The three strategies I learned from the presentations that will influence my work with families is having a that environment where they have the free space to talk about something that might affect their child or that might cause them not to be supportive for their child, educating yourself is a another one because some the families that you might face in your classroom you could have no idea on how to educate that child so, I think it is important to do the proper research and gain knowledge about families that you might not know about. The last one would be having a open bias because when you have a open bias you learn more and you also make it comfortable for the parent to discuss any matters and the child to have a ability to even discuss something that could possibly be bothering them. 5. Which family structure really is challenging for you to work with? Why? Give three steps you can take to learn more about that family structure and to become more open to developing strong, reciprocal relationships with them. The family structure that is really challenging for me to work with would have to be families with step parents because I feel like I would never know if it is okay to tell the step parent about the child or should I get permission from the child`s biological parent before talking to the step parent. I think having good communication can help out both ways because you’re talking to the parents and sharing the well-being of the child in daily life. The second one has to be inclusion because I feel like when you include parent who may be step parent or parents you are one building a connection but also learning about the family as well when you exchange emails, make scheduled events and conferences. The third one has to be having resources for the parents and for your yourself because having those resources will help you learn more about the family demographic ways and it’s a good way to even learn how to communication the family. 6. Write a personal philosophy statement about working with diverse families (the statement should tell what you believe about developing strong, reciprocal relationships with diverse families). Then, tell how your philosophy shows in your work with your children and families. Based on research it has shown that partnerships between schools and families not only help with the children in their achievements but it is beneficial to families and educators as well. As an early childhood family member educator, my philosophy is really focused on creating and maintaining a strong, vibrant, and effective partnership with families and the community that can help the children succeed. My approach of learning and having a effective communication between the families and school, respect the cultural diversity and encourage opportunies to learn at home as well. Having this type of philosophy is going to help my work with children and families because one I am gaining knowledge and inspiring these families who may be immigrants, or come from a really cultural background that yes your cultural is important but so is build that connection with your child and being supporter for them, nourishing them with the education that will help them build a future one for themselves as well.
