W09 SW Disciple Activity: Moral Decisions – The Value of Life Instructions Answer the following questions completely. Question 1  Did you watch all of Moral Decisions: The Value of Life? (Y/N) Yes Question 2  Who did you choose to teach what you learned and why? How long was your conversation? I decided to teach my husband about it because it is a topic that I would like to discuss with him and see his opinion about assisted suicide and what he would do if he faced that reality. The conversation lasted about 20 minutes. Question 3 How did your conversation help you understand this issue (and how you feel about it) better? I believe that the conversation was helpful to get to the conclusion that besides people with debilitating conditions, go through a lot of suffering, you don’t have the right to ask someone to take their life. I think that it would be a very hard burden to put into someone else’s life. We also came to the conclusion that it is an act of being selfish, because the person that dies is not going to deal with the mental wear that the living family members will go through verses if a family member died of natural circumstances. It also brings the discussion if someone takes a life of someone that it is ill to take advantage of inheritance. That can give the opportunity to people to take your life legally when in fact they are committing a crime. Question 4 Acting as a Change Agent, how could you ethically help someone working through such difficult issues? BYU-Idaho SW 260
From what I have seen from my mother-in-law who is a nurse and works with people in hospice. What happens is that after all the treatments options are exhausted, it is given to the family and client the right to that pass in a peaceful and less painful way as possible. The difference here is that the person will die naturally but they will receive the medication needed to give comfort. Turning off or refusing to give treatment is not a good option in my opinion because many times the person that wants to end their life wants to do it because of fear of something they never experienced before. I still believe the value of life should be respected and ended in the most natural way. As mentioned in the movie opening the opportunity for people to decide who deserves to live or not can bring the idea that is debatable and bring ethical concerns of supremacy theories that can rise from that thinking.
