Chapter 6 Case Study 1. An important part of the ethical decision-making process is to first recognize an ethical dilemma. Considering the examples provided in this section, should sport organizations boycott participation in states with discriminatory laws? The HB2 led many sport organizations to boycott or withdraw from events in North Carolina. While I believe everyone should have the right to withdraw or boycott especially for ethical reasons like the HB2 bill. The sports organizations needed to understand the potential money loss they would receive by not participating or the experiences that led to the boycott in North Carolina. I think these sports organizations did that. Especially when it comes to sports teams that routinely deal with the LGBT community and the effects that something so negative as HB2 would have on their team. These sports organizations realized the morality and ethical issues of this bill far outweighed the monetary benefits. They chose what was best for their organizations based on their beliefs, I agree with them, and they had every right to do so. 2. What situational factors in sport can provide leaders with the tools to successfully navigate an ethical dilemma? Read through the chapter to help answer this question. Situational factors include the organizations, laws, and social norms of a community. Some of these factors include the structure, culture, and socialization practices of an organization or team. Especially in sports and ethical dilemmas, they really have to look at how situations can affect the team. One must consider socialization because it is often how your team will look or act moving forward following this dilemma. It is also important to remember one factor is making sure this decision is not made by one person but following interactions between multiple people within an organization. 3. Explain how you could use the ethical decision-making model described in the chapter to determine whether you would allow your team to participate in a state with discriminatory laws. The ethical decision-making model is something that can help people determine how to handle an ethical issue. With the model, people can identify the magnitude of consequences from participating or the ethical issue. They need to understand socially how that will affect their organization and the probability of those effects. They need to look at the moral intensity of what the HB2 law was and how it is going to affect so many morally. With that, they need to use their moral judgment while understanding the situational factors that lead to participating or not in the state. We must look and see if participating would mean condoning the behavior morally and what they would show to our team. In the end, I would use the decision-making model to determine whether my team would not participate.
