PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT PLAN 1 Guelph Humber University ECS 4040-DE01- Program Development, Administration and Evaluation Professor Valerie Trew Tuesday, September 26, 2023 Philosophy
PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT PLAN 2 Children are unique and capable individuals who need support and guidance in their development. This program is called Little Wonders Child Care Centre and serves children ages 18 months to 4 years. This program will permit children to learn both through independent play and self-directed play activities, which will allow children to grow and further their development. The curriculum will be carefully thought out to ensure that it meets each component of the Four Foundations of Learning (belonging, engagement, expression, and well-being). The program will ensure that each child feels safe and accepted in their learning environment. Every child will be provided with quality care that will set them up for their future. The curriculum also allows for any accommodations and/or modifications that a child may need as it is recognized that every child has different needs and may need extra support in certain areas. The program will welcome outside support and programs that could be beneficial to a child and their family. Not every child learns the same way and it is important that a program recognizes this and is willing to work with the child’s unique individual needs. Children learn social skills, language skills, and simply how to make friends while being in a productive learning environment, surrounded by other children and supportive educators. Learning will be fun and parents will feel confident in sending their children here for care. Their children will be learning, but also enjoy attending child care! View of the Child Children are capable and competent learners that will thrive in a play-based environment that is carefully constructed based on their interests and needs. Children will be active participants in their learning. More specifically, a large number of play experiences will be planned as open-ended so that children can use their imagination to decide the direction they take the play experiences. Process of Learning
PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT PLAN 3 The centre will focus on play-based learning with the environment being the third teacher. This way the children will be able to explore their interests through imaginative play while being engaged with their peers and selves. They will be an active participant in the classroom with exploration through open-ended play. Curriculum will be carefully thought out to ensure that children are meeting each of the Four Foundations of Learning (well-being, engagement, expression, and belonging). Play experiences will be designed so every child has the opportunity to demonstrate these four essential foundations. Educators will work together to create a curriculum that is effective and make any modifications/accommodations that a child may need. Role of Program The purpose of the program is to provide “a home away from home” environment where the children will thrive and flourish. Parents will have peace of mind knowing that their children are being loved and cared for while having endless possibilities to learn and grow. Families will be active participants in their children's growth and will be welcome at any time. This will be an environment where children feel safe, welcomed, and encouraged to express their opinions. Open communication and partnering with community resources will strengthen the child's development and help support individual needs. This program acknowledges that “it takes a village” to raise a child and making use of outside resources is always welcomed and encouraged. Role of Educator The Educator's role is to provide a safe and nurturing environment in which the children can learn and grow in. The educators will not make all learning decisions and not only provide closed-ended learning opportunities. They will allow space for children to express their likes and dislikes, and provide ample open-ended play experiences so that children can be creative in their learning experiences. While they will be a decision maker, these decisions will be based

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT PLAN 4 on the children's interests and needs. The educators will collaborate with each other, the family/guardians, and outside services (if needed) to ensure that each child receives the quality care that they need to flourish in their development. The educators will be ready and willing to work with the needs of the child and their family. View of the Family Families will play as little or as big of a role as they choose. There will be opportunities for the families to be a part of their child’s learning journey, and they will be welcomed into the program. Educators will communicate with parents about the child’s day and progress and about any concerns that there might be. The educators recognize that the child’s family and/or caregivers know the child best and encourage any suggestions or feedback on what the child may need. Resources will be shared with the families as needed, all the while keeping in mind that each family will need different things as their child{ren} have unique needs, as does their family itself. Mission Statement To provide children with a learning environment that is safe and nurturing. Children will be provided with high-quality care that will promote the development of essential skills that are needed to be successful in their future. Vision A team of warm, welcoming, and nurturing educators who provide quality care to children (ages 18 months to 4 years old) and ensure their safety. Values Safety: The Little Wonders Child Care Centre will ensure and provide children with a safe learning environment. Inclusive: All children, regardless of differing abilities and backgrounds, are welcomed.
PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT PLAN 5 Collaboration: The educators will work with coworkers, families, and outside resources to ensure that children are receiving quality care, as well as any additional support that the child or family may need. Caring: Children in the care of educators at the Little Wonders Child Care Centre will nurture the children in their care and treat them with respect and kindness. Accountability: Building meaningful relationships with children and their families that focuses on open communication and collaboration Needs and Objectives Little Wonders Child Care Centre will be located in Dorchester, Ontario. The first objective of this program is to expand parents'/guardians’ access to child care for their children in Dorchester by opening up a child care centre with 50 spots. As stated in reports, “women and families in Thames Centre are having a tougher time rebounding from the pandemic due to the severe lack in child care spaces” (Lack of Childcare Spaces in Thames Centre Will Hold Back Our Economic Recovery, n.d.). It is imperative that more centres open up so parents can return to work. Without child care, a parent/guardian has to stay home to take care of their child. In today’s economy, people can’t afford to not work. The second objective of this child care centre is to provide families and their children with affordable, high-quality care. "Safe and affordable high-quality child care is critically important for hard-working families in every corner of the province, as well as Ontario's economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic," said Minister of Education Stephen Lecce” (Education News Canada, n.d). The cost of child care will be kept as low as possible, however, parents can still expect their children to receive the high-quality care that their children deserve.
PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT PLAN 6 The safety of children is extremely important and educators will do everything in their power to ensure the safety of the children in their care. The third objective of this child care centre is to create a program that is developmentally appropriate for the children. In Dorchester, there are not any licensed child care centres, there is only one that is in the process of being built. This community is in need of quality licensed child care centres with a curriculum that is developmentally appropriate for the children in the program. References
