What Kant sees lacking in the Golden Rule is that it fails in its so-called purpose because a consistent moral formula cannot be subject to unforeseen personal inclinations. Chapter 4 - Discussion Question What is the purpose of ethical conduct, and on what criteria would you evaluate your conduct? The purpose of ethical conduct is for everyone to live relatively peacefully and mostly harmoniously. My conduct is based on how people treat me and others. I live by the rule, treat others with respect or how you expect to be treated. I always say people deserve respect but also deserve what they have coming for them.
