In the case of Maria, I would have to tread very carefully because the state of North Carolina has laws whereas, at the age of 13, any minor may give “consent to a physician licensed to practice medicine in North Carolina for medical health services for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of venereal disease and other diseases reportable under G.S. 130A-135, pregnancy, abuse of controlled substances or alcohol, and emotional disturbance” (FindLaw, 2023). The next item that I would have to consider is being a school counselor, what does my job require me to have to tell parents? Ethically, I think that it is my responsibility to keep Maria’s secret and try to get her to examine her relationship with her family and see that telling them may not be as bad as she may think if I am able to intervene and assist her with telling them the bad news. Because they are Catholic, and catholic people do not believe in abortion, she could regret this decision later and I know this, but I cannot share this with her because this is an opinion of mine. I can ask her if she has considered all of her options besides abortion and if she had considered sharing the information with her parents and with the boy that got her pregnant to begin with as this is just not her responsibility to bear alone. I can encourage her to be open and honest with her parents and let her know that getting an abortion is actually not an option in the state of North Carolina for anyone under the age of eighteen unless they have parental consent. I can encourage her to be honest and forthcoming with her parents so that if she does decide to end the pregnancy, she does so in a manner that is safe for her. According to section 1A of the 2014 Code of Ethics, I am primarily responsible for promoting the dignity and respect for the welfare of my clients, and in this case that would be Maria. Even though she is only fourteen years old, I need to also respect her confidentiality and respect her wishes if she wants to keep this information from her parents (American Counseling Association, 2014). I would, however, strongly encourage a meeting with her and her parents, and myself to discuss the matter if she feels safe to do so. I would hope that the close relationships that many Hispanic individuals have with their families are true with Maria’s and that she will see that this would be a difficult discussion, but not an impossible one (Sue & Sue, 2015).
