TOPIC 1 DQ1
Read the "Discussion Forum Philosophy" to acquaint yourself with the expectations of doctoral learners posting in the discussion forum. Define the process of theory building. Identify a historical change or event that had significant impact on the development of nursing theory. Discuss the effect of the change/event on nursing from that point forward, the contribution(s) to nursing that resulted, and how it relates now to successfully preparing the DNP for practice. Provide examples and literature support.
After reading the “Discussion Forum Philosophy,” there is an understanding of the expectations of doctoral learners in posting in the discussion forum. The heightened level of expectation is to be expected in a doctoral program environment. Part of the challenge for any doctoral learner is gather information and use it in the necessary means. The process of theory building is an art as compared to being a science. There is some creativity and imagination involved in theory building as much as there is the need to be methodical and rigorous as a scientist (Rivard, 2020). Science has characteristics that reveals the cumulative nature through the development of successive studies which builds upon prior research. This is a process of continuously refining and building of theory through a progressive journey for parsimonious statements that precisely correlates with reality (Butts & Rich, 2022). Therefore, science is seen as theory-building where logic and mathematics creates the essence of this process. Science leads to theory-building activities thus there must
be theoretical foundation for nursing knowledge and practice for the field of study to be considered a science (Butts & Rich, 2022). A historical event that had a significant impact on the development of nursing theory was Rogers of 1970.
Rogers’ theory is known as the Science of Unitary Human Beings which viewed nursing as both a science
and an art (Gonzalo, 2023). This theory surmised that the human being and the environment are manifestations of each other. This served as an important milestone in the attempts to develop the theoretical foundation for nursing. Rogers’ theory changed nursing as the science of nursing and the art of
nursing are both utilized today to better the lives of patients. Roger’s theory is deeply embedded in the nursing profession as the development of the Science of Unitary Human Beings is seen throughout the profession. The presentation ultimately prepares the DNP for practice as it continues to showcase that human beings are more than the sum of their whole. It is almost common knowledge with much support research that suggests the built environment is a positive factor in patient health outcomes (Jamshidi et al., 2020). References
