Chapter One Critical Thinking Exercises Dakota Jones Pg. 9 Each of these philosophies entails its own policy, to impel criminal justice employees to adhere to the policy’s intent. Choose one of the philosophies above and write a policy designed to implement that philosophy at a particular step of the criminal justice process (that is, to be implemented by the police, courts, or corrections). If you find this task easy, try writing a policy that satisfies the dictates of two or three of these philosophies. Do you find this to be easy or difficult? The policy for the philosophy of deterrence that is to be implemented by the police is that police arrest those committing crimes. They show the criminal the damage they have done and then show what happens to someone that has executed the same crime or a similar crime. If there are others around during the arrest, the police would show them what the outcome is and it may stop others from doing the same thing because they see what can happen. The courts would also include what has happened and the punishments given to others that have done something similar. Those in the court room would hear what a specific action can lead to and it may stop others from committing crimes. Pg. 13 Which type of statistic would be best suited to study homicide in U.S. cities? What about the sexual abuse of young children? What statistic would be best suited to studying drug use by high-school students? In general, for each of the three types of data (official, self-report, and victimization), what types of crime is each best suited to capture? What types of crime is each poorly suited to capture? The best suited type of statistic to study a homicide in U.S. cities would be official statistics. The type of data that would most poorly capture this type of crime would be self-report statistics. The best suited type of statistic to study the sexual abuse of young children would be victimization studies. The type of data that would most poorly capture this type of crime would victimization studies. The best suited type of statistic to study drug use by high-school students would be self- report statistics. The type of data that would most poorly capture this type of crime would be official statistics.
Chapter One Critical Thinking Exercises Dakota Jones Pg. 22 What technological advances do you think will arise in the next decade? How will these advances influence citizens, crime, social control, and criminal justice? I think that there will be technological advances every year in the next decade. Wearable devices will arise and become a new trend. These types of devices include glasses with cameras. This could influence how crime is looked at because criminal actions could be caught on the cameras on the glasses that people are wearing. I also believe they could cause an issue because people may not want to be on camera especially if it is recording. I also think that more and more devices are going to be able to talk and you will be able to talk to them and tell them what to do. An example would be our household appliances. We could tell our coffee maker to start making us coffee or tell our trash can to open. This could cause issues if there was a malfunction in the system. Also, if you become able to control everything in your house from technology, hackers or anyone that gets a hold of the application and password could control things in your house. I recently have watched a television show and this guy lived in a technology house and his shower water was controlled by technology and there were cameras in every inch of the house. Someone who had the password, went on and turned the shower water all the way up while he was under it and he ended up getting hurt. I can also see driverless cars advancing in the next decade, because they are already started to become more and more popular. This may be able to help criminals commit crimes easier and faster. I still wonder if people are going to be able to hack into these cars and take over and if so, the police could hack into a criminals driverless car and find them and catch them. Pg. 23 This chapter has outlined four very large historical trends in criminal justice. What trends do you think we will see over the next 20 to 30 years? How will the system react to these large social trends, and how will justice be affected? I believe that there will be a lot of trends in criminal justice in the next 20 to 30 years. After this past year and all of the hate on police officers, I believe there will be a change in how police officers are taught and how they do things. A statistic to show how many police officers have
Chapter One Critical Thinking Exercises Dakota Jones resigned in 2020 since everything occurred, in one location, 31 officers resigned within four months when normally only around twenty officers quit all year. I believe that we will see a lot more drug use and even the use of worse drugs. The system will need to attempt to get this under control before there are an excessive number of overdoses. The justice system may start to feel overwhelmed if they cannot control or figure out the root of the drug problems. Hopefully COVID-19 has calmed down and is rarely talked about in 20 to 30 years. We do not know if another virus could come around and we could be in the same position we have been in for the past year. If another virus occurs and is dangerous towards people, police have to help control that people are following protocols. Technology is advancing every second, every day, every year. We can see the technology advances that we have now, I can’t even imagine what we will see in twenty to thirty years. I think as technology advances, the criminals will continue to figure out a way to hack into things. Because of the technology advance, we may need more people in our legal force that can handle situations with criminal activity and technology.
