Conservatives believe schools are historically evolved institutions that perform necessary roles in society (Gutek, 2014). Conservatives believe that when schools begin to perform non-
academic functions regarding social concepts they distort and weaken their primary role (Gutek, 2014). Many conservatives believe that education has been moving in the wrong direction due to disrespect from society to both teachers and the institution itself. Along with this, respect is something that many conservatives believe there is value in teaching; “Conservatives believe that
schools should be a place where students learn to respect their country, their teachers, and each other” (Gutek, p. 266, 2014). In this situation, the principal is displaying his expectations of how students should behave at all times by monitoring the cafeteria with a paddle in hand. This display shows an obvious concern for teaching the values of respect and order within the lunchroom, it is causing significant emotional harm to some students. While a teacher that has a more conservative philosophy might be okay with that in order to promote order and civility in the lunchroom, I would not. I would suggest to the principal that the paddle may not be the best way to promote order and civility. I would suggest teacher volunteers or extra duty during lunch time. In promoting this, I would suggest that I too want order and civility and am willing to guide that in the lunchroom. Because the principal is inflexible on the subject of order, I would not persuade a total end to the lunchtime duty. I believe that all students, especially kindergarteners, deserve the ability to eat their lunch without fearing discipline through corporal punishment. Promoting the lunchroom as a place that teaches students respect and promotes order validates the principals core values. Suggesting teachers also playing a role in this might also articulate to the principal that teachers believe that they should promote character education as

well. I do not believe that teachers or the principal need to carry around a paddle in order to promote order or warn discipline for kindergarteners. I believe that extra teachers on lunch duty will prevent students from being disorderly and promote good values to these students.
