MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY Katelyn Kostelc November 30, 2020 My Teaching Philosophy Timmy James
MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY My Teaching Philosophy Introduction If we ask people, “What is the best way for teachers to teach?” We would get a wide variety of answers. Why is that? It is because teaching varies with each teacher just the way everyone has different personalities and characteristics. There is no set way to teach, but we are given many guidelines along the way. The kind of teacher I want to be is one who makes sure her students are learning, has a good relationship with her students, and help students grow. What Is Knowledge and Understanding? Knowledge and understanding go hand in hand. These two things are far more than just memorization for an upcoming test. For children to know and understand something they need to be able to explain the ins and out of why and how something works. I had a course once on nutrition, and we had to learn about things such as lipids. We learned that there are three types of lipids, but we also learned what made each these lipids and why they were different. This helped us to understand what we were learning instead of just memorizing the material. I had a few professors that would give us a study guide with multiple choice questions. When we took the real test, the questions and answer choices were the exact same as the study guide. While this made it very easy for us as students it only required memorization and no understanding of the material. What Is Worth Knowing Teachers have a set of standards to follow. Standards give teachers guidelines for what students need to know. This allows teachers to assess students to see if they are progressing and understanding. However, there are some things outside of standards that are good for students to
MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY know such as how to budget and a good financial management. These are things that are not covered enough in school, and are things that every student could benefit from knowing for when they are on their own. What Does It Mean to Learn? Learning is an ongoing thing. It builds on itself based upon things that we already know. Learning is something that we have to be willing to do, and it carries with us throughout our lives. When I hear other people talking about something that is different than the way I know it I take it in and process it so I can learn. I retain what I learn, so I can use it to make better choices and become more educated. How Do You Know Learning Has Taken Place? I know learning has taken place by asking the students. It is easy and efficient to assess students as we go through a lesson to ensure they are learning. I can have them raise numbers in the air from one to four to see if they have no clue what is going on or to see if they are ready for a quiz on the material. In many instances when students are learning they are asking questions. If they are quiet and have blank faces that more than likely means they are not following along. Making sure learning has taken place can be done quickly to help you move through the material at a steady pace. What Should Be the Role of the Teacher? The teacher is there to not only educate students but to give students a safe environment to learn. Teachers need to make sure that students feel secure in their classroom and that conflicts between students are resolved. A comfortable environment is very important in order for students to be able to learn. As a teacher, we do not have to be our students’ best friend, but

MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY we do need to make sure our students are comfortable telling us anything. When “home” is a place they do not want to be, our classroom should be. What Should Be the Role of the Student? Students should come to class prepared. I remember that being many of my elementary school teachers’ rules, but it is an excellent rule. Coming to class prepared can range from making sure the student his or her pencil or coming into the classroom and leaving any thoughts other than today’s social studies outside the door. If students go into a classroom not ready for their exam it will reflect poorly through their grades. Students should always be respectful to their teacher and come prepared. What is the Ultimate Purpose of Education? The ultimate purpose of education is to provide students with skills that will help them be successful in life. Students learn so many things from school. These things should include making them better people in society and being successful with their careers down the road. Education should inspire children to continue to learn as they grow older and always strive to learn more. It is something that we cannot go without. What are Your Core Educational Values? My core educational values are to make sure every student know he or she is welcome and loved. There is nothing that he or she could do or say to change that. My other value for education is to make learning enjoyable for students and always be positive and exciting for them. Keeping them on their toes is something that will keep them interested from the beginning of class until the end. Showing that I care as a teacher is very important to me as well. Any time I had a teacher that showed their strong compassion, it made me want to be there and learn even more.
MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY Conclusion In closing, there are many different ways for professionals to teach. Some are good and some are bad, but that is for each of us to figure out. It is also what makes every teacher unique. Some teachers are fun and some are boring and never stray from their plan. It is important for teachers to keep students interested in learning so that they come to class each day eager to know more. The kind of teacher I want to be is one who makes sure her students are learning, has a good relationship with her students, and help students grow.
