I totally agree! Very rarely can so many powerful truths be summed up into 13 simple statements. These are the 13 reasons why we continue to live a life of discipleship and when we study them, our testimonies can grow exponentially. I think that these articles truly encapsulate the fundamentals of believing like a child because if we take the time to simplify our faith, we will be strengthened in our conviction to follow the Savior. I know that I want to continue to live my life in a way that is clear, straight, and narrow. There is nothing more powerful than the doctrine of Christ. Ya the articles of faith are very simplistic and easy to understand as they should be. God s not the author of confusion but strives to enlighten the knowledge of his children in plainness. It reminds me of the scripture in 3 Nephi 31:3 which says, "For my soul delighteth in plainness; for after this manner doth the Lord God work among the children of men. For the Lord God giveth light unto the understanding; for he speaketh unto men according to their language, unto their understanding." As we trust in the basic principles of the Gospel, we can be assured that we are being led in the right way. This week the commentary on the 13th article of faith made me really think about some things. As I was studying, the quote from President Spencer W. Kimball stuck out to me, "God does notice us, and he watches over us. But it is usually through another person that he meets our needs. Therefore, it is vital that we serve each other in the kingdom”. As God's children and as children in Zion, we are responsible for showing God's love to others. When we are honest, true, chaste, and benevolent we show respect for ourselves and appreciation for God's divine gifts in our lives. I would have to say that as we remember God notices us, our integrity develops and our charity flourishes as we are filled with the love of God. By following the example of our Savior, we are blessed with understanding and can continue to grow. I love that you pointed out that Heavenly Father uses us to reach His children's needs. It is amazing that He trusts us enough to allow us to help Him in his work even though we make many mistakes! This reminds me a lot of my mission. When I was on my mission, I would often get caught up thinking about my many flaws and wondering if anyone would ever join the church because I worried I couldn't teach them well enough. But as I became more experienced on my mission, I realized that it doesn't matter so much how "good" I am at doing something. I just need a willing heart, and Heavenly Father can help me and help the person I am trying to serve/teach. It's so interesting to consider what makes someone a prophet or not. I was reading a book called "Visions of Glory," and it's very interesting . I experienced on my mission a wide diversity in thought about this book. It's about a series of visions that a man named "Spencer" has. I read a scathing review by FAIR Mormon. And I was struck by how many of their arguments against Spencer could be, and were, lobbed against Joseph Smith as well at the time he was speaking out about his visions.
Although I don't really take stock in "Visions of Glory," and to me personally, it felt like reading latter-day saint fan-fiction and think it can be a spiritually dangerous rabbit hole to go down -- it caused me to consider what really makes someone a prophet. Authority really is so important and comforting. I'm glad the Lord's Church has order and structure, I'm glad it's blatantly clear who and what I should and need to believe to be prepared for the Lord's coming. All these other voices really won't be nearly as helpful as the voices of the latter-day prophets of God.
